The Billiard Club's first tournament of the year – the Beginners
8-Ball Practice Tournament - was held on Thurs., March 12. A local
rain storm and concerns about coronavirus/COVID-19 meant that
only six beginning players turned out for the tournament.
The format was simple 8-Ball, which had been demonstrated
in a game lesson the previous week. This would be the first time
these players had an opportunity to apply the lessons of bridge,
grip, stance, aim, and position they learned in January and February
during our basic lessons.
The players were Denny Kent, Carla Kent, Mary Ann Williams, Ken
Schreiner, David Yoder, and John Trezevant. With only six players,
it was decided that each player would play three matches against
different opponents. The players with the best records would meet
in a final match.
The goal of the Beginners Practice Tournament is to help new
players see that our tournaments are run in a friendly, social
environment. Yes, there were nerves, but it definitely was an
afternoon of fun. More than one cue ball followed an object ball into
the pocket for a foul and ball-in-hand for the opponent. And then
there were the cinch shots that stopped right in front of a pocket,
and somehow failed to go down! There was a lot of laughter as each
player met someone new in the friendly game of pool.
When the dust finally settled, Denny Kent met Ken Schreiner for
the final match of the afternoon, and Denny was the winner. Well,
done!
Four days later, the indefinite closure of the Clubhouse was
announced.
