8 | OHCC LIVING | MAY 2020 | Landscape Committee LANDSCAPE STRATEGY: Mulch to manage weeds and soil moisture. Mulching has become the Master Landscaper's primary treatment to reduce weeds and retain moisture. As it breaks down, it forms rich, loamy topsoil. Weeds pull out easily and new plants get off to a good start because the mulch keeps the topsoil moist. The use of mulch is also an important IPM strategy. Mulch is a great way to both abate weeds and reduce the use of pesticides that may disrupt our beneficial insects, birds, and stress the plants. It is used on all the new drought-tolerant slope plantings along Leisure Village Way – enhancing the beauty as noted in accompanying pictures. The Villages that have converted front yards using low- water ornamentals and native plants are also carpeted with mulch. OHCC residents who would like to use mulch in their side and backyards (not in the front easement area cared for by each village's landscape maintenance provider) may do so. Various types of mulch from can be found locally at gardening supply businesses. An additional resource for Oceanside residents is the El Corazon Composting Facility where residents may obtain mulch free of charge. There is no charge for regular mulch or a small charge for specialized mulches. This is legal, local mulch from homeowners' green recycling bins, and is part of Oceanside's "zero waste" program. All Oceanside residents may bag their own. Bring your own shovel or pitchfork, some plastic bags, buckets or pails that you can easily lift and carry. Moody's allows Oceanside residents to take free rocks, decomposed granite, bricks and pavers that have been dropped off by contractors. These recycled items are in good condition and can be very helpful when you just need a small amount. Check in at the trailer to let them know what you need, and the office personnel will direct you. Large boulders can also be had for the price of delivery and placement at your site. Keeping connected through technology has become the sole focus of your Audio-Visual Committee while we are "self-isolated." Your AV Committee that was busy supporting OHCC's entertainment and seminar activity is available for any of the needs that are now vital to keep the communication as good as possible. We are thankful for our staff technician, Anthony Scalise, and group of volunteers who are each using their skills to help as needed… working from home. The White House doctor praised millennials for their tech savviness. They know how to maintain contact with each other without being in large social gatherings. We are having to become "millennials." Master Board and Village Board meetings are now being done remotely via Zoom. As always, they are being recorded and replayed on Channel 1960 and the "OnDemand" section of the community's website. The HOA with our help, added exercise videos on our community's website. It's another resource we residents can watch, and follow along with, to get some exercise while we are all staying home. Considerations about copyright law and other permissions were worked out and it is now available in the "Residents" section of Ocean Hills Country Club website. Cox Channel 1960 is our 'in-house' channel maintained by the AV Committee. Our goal is to provide you with a current program schedule, and relevant information important to our community that you can't get on commercial television. We were asked by the City of Oceanside to carry a public service announcement about the care we all need to take regarding our sewer system. This PSA is now being run before each show. Also on Channel 1960 is our repeated showings of our previous events — before social distancing. You can see the program schedule on Channel 1960 or our website in the resident's section, see the Quick Link for "OHCC TV." (If you are experiencing problems with Channel 1960, please report it to the staff at (760) 758-8772). Stay well!
