Thank you to everyone for coming by our table at Volunteer Day last month. It was great seeing everyone. For those who missed our March book sale, we still have plenty of books to borrow in all three of our libraries. Please take advantage of this wonderful resource. Speaking of wonderful resources, thanks again to our great volunteers. They do such a good job restocking and keeping our libraries in great shape. Should you like to join this notable team, please call Peggy Inman at 845-8609. If you are a book lover, this is a good way to get a first look at the new donations and also to provide a service to your fellow Sun Lakers. Thank you to those who donate books. We appreciate it. We are always in need of large print volumes. Does this tell you we're a senior community? Please call Ann Reese at 845-3775 if you have a large number of books to donate and she will notify our volunteers. Our book for the month is "The Last Runaway," by Tracy Chevalier. A young Quaker in 19th century Ohio helps slaves escape along the underground railroad. Can she still do the right thing when the stakes are raised? 16 | sun lakes lifestyles | may 2013 | social clubs & groups mystery theater & more paisano club Spring is busting out all over. And as the warm weather approaches, our schedule of events continues to sizzle with good food, camaraderie and good entertainment. Spotlight this month is on our treasurer, Dee Nicoletti. Dee served as treasurer since the club's inception and continues today. Dee not only does an excellent job as treasurer, but has become Membership Chair and keeps the roster correct, adds and deletes members and keeps all contact information current. In addition, Dee sends emails to alert membership of upcoming events and collects money for the food venues each month. Dee is very competent and brings lots of experience as if she was involved in a Paisano Club in a previous life! We are fortunate to have Dee Nicoletti on our Board. Upcoming events: June 7, is our next meeting (as always, South Clubhouse, 5 pm). We have a special program and food venue. The International Dancers will be performing Chinese dances and to keep with the theme, a catered Chinese dinner will be served. The cost will be $12 for club membership and $14 for guests. Submit all checks to Dee Nicoletti; cut-off will be May 31. July's meeting on July 5, will be a celebration of Independence Day with an all-American game of Bingo. Stay tuned for more detail. Paisano members and their friends are invited to Del Mar Racetrack on Thurs., Aug. 15, 10 am to 7:30 pm. We are honoring a request that has been made by a few of our members. We will start taking sign ups at our next Paisano meeting. The price is $35 and will include deluxe coach service, Club House seating, and programs. Lunch is on your own at the famous Del Mar Sandwich Shop. There is no refund on this excursion; however, you may transfer your reservation. The Paisano By-Laws have been changed regarding dues. Dues will be due and payable starting in July, in the amount of $7.50 to cover only the last six months of the year. Then commencing in 2014, January dues will be due for the entire year and will be $15 pp. This will put our membership dues on a calendar year. Call Dee Nicoletti, our Membership Chair, if you have an interest in joining the Paisano Club. For those of you that have been waiting to purchase tickets for our next play, "Tomb With A View," we are proud to announce that you will have an opportunity to get those "best seats in the house" starting May 13. We will officially have a table in the Main Clubhouse lobby for ticket sales of those $8 seats from May 13 through May 29, Monday through Friday and from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. Of course, if you are planning a trip and won't be home until one of our performance dates of Thurs., May 30 through Sun., June 2, you will be able to buy tickets at the door. However, IF you really want those "best seats" we suggest that you arrange with a friend or neighbor to buy them for you! The performance times for the shows Thursday through Saturday is 7 pm, and Sunday will be a 3 pm matinée. To bring you up to speed on the premise of the play, suffice it to say that it IS a serious mystery, but with characters that could have come out of a British funny paper. You have the family "solicitor" played by Dan Comerford, the family "elder" played by Mark Faber, the quirky family "wine hobbyist," played by Peggy Laurel, the droll "apple-eating sister, played by Lou Evans, the "out-in-left-field" brother who thinks he's Julius Caesar, played by Fred Hanrahan, HIS nurse, played by Patricia Elevi, the overly "hot" Monica, who tries to jump the bones of any man that enters the premises, played by Ginger Burris, the butler of 40 years, played by Joe Vallely, and two very unsuspecting guests, one of which is a potential inheritor to the will of the just passed family patriarch, played by Marty Steggell and Gaylord Spence who plays her "pansy" secretary. With the wolf-howls in the background and people dropping like flies you'd think you'd opened the doors to the Frankenstein residence in Transylvania! This entire farce is ably directed by Joe Vallely and kept on pace by Beverly Boatman as stage manager. This is one you'll not want to miss! If you think all of this sound like the kind of fun in which you'd like to be involved, please visit us at our next monthly business meeting on June 4, at 1 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Check us out. We think that you'll be glad you did! Info., Ginger Burris, 845-9685. drama club In April, we presented "Love, Loss and What I Wore," directed by Sallie Smelker. Audiences were delighted by the performances of Corky Evans, Harriet Briant, Rose Hermanson, Lynne Lewis, Pat Naylor and Fran Rayner. This month, be sure to catch the Drama Club' Readers Theater production of "First Contact," on May 25, in the South Clubhouse. There will be one performance only, with complimentary wine and cheese. Doors will open at 6:30 pm, and the performance will begin at 7 pm. Tickets will be $6, and seating is limited. Advanced reservations and payment can be made by calling Harriet Briant at 7600383. No sales at the door. The play, written by our own Ken Brown, is based on a classic science fiction story by Murray Leinster. In a far corner of the galaxy, a starship from Earth encounters an alien vessel. Neither ship knows the location or even the direction of the other's home planet. When communication is established, the two crews realize that in spite of their rough parity, they have much to learn from each other. However, the risks of exposing the locations of their home worlds when their character and intentions are unknown, presents a deadly quandary. The crews must search for a solution that does not include the destruction of the other ship. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Drama Club, there are always opportunities for people with little or no experience on both sides of the curtain. We are always looking for those who want to work on costumes, lights, sound, sets, props, stage managing or the front-of-house-people for ticket sales, ushering, promotional design, etc. There are opportunities for novices through acting workshops and Readers Theatre. And of course our two full productions each year delight all who enjoy the spotlight. All members enjoy monthly social dinners, cast parties and barbeques, or discounted tickets to area theatres like The Redlands Footlighters, CAST Players and The Palm Springs Follies. At only $13 per year for single membership and $20 per couple, The Drama Club is a great deal and a lot of fun. Join us! social clubs & groups | sun lakes lifestyles | may 2013 | 17
