We were informed that the State has mandated a 20 percent reduction in potable water consumption over the nextfive5 years. The city has already schedules a 7 percent additional water rate increase this year, and is anticipating a 12 percent electric increase as well. A large part of the board's strategic planning has been devoted to preparing ourselves to meet these concerns. The following are some of the steps we have taken so far and will be taking to address this issue. Some time ago, we began a program of replacing inefficient spray irrigation with drip systems in common areas. This was temporarily halted while other common area landscape and irrigation projects were being considered. The board is now looking to continue that program. Turf was removed from approximately 26,000 sq. ft. around the 10th tee of the golf course. It was replaced by drought tolerant plants and mulch. In addition, irrigation was also converted to a drip system. Although the project is not as visually appealing, it has saved a lot of water. This area will be reworked to be more attractive. We will not move forward into new areas until we can show you what we propose as an attractive finished product. Other golf course and common areas are being analyzed for conversions as well. One recently completed project is the replacement of the Lake Liners on Holes 1 and 2 on the Championship Course. It entailed By George Moyer, SLCC HOA President the removal of the 25-year-old liners, drying out the existing protective dirt cover of the liner, regrading the bottom of the ponds, placing a new liner, replacing the dirt, and putting new concrete collars around the banks. Over the next two years, other ponds on the course will receive new liners and collars. Some might say that this is the golf course and really had no impact or interest to the non-golfers of our community. However, that is not accurate. The old liners were well past their useful life. They were deteriorating, the unprotected banks were eroding, and the liners were receding. A lot of water was lost due to these conditions. By replacing the old liners and adding the concrete collars, we will reduce the amount of water lost, thus saving money. In addition, the pumps and controllers for our irrigation system are reserve items that are due to be replaced. They are being replaced by more efficient equipment with up-to-date technology that will not only save us a considerable amount of water, but also significant energy costs. Finally, there is the issue of recycled water. With the loss of a good portion of their water allocation, it is likely that the city will go forward with a recycling project. Whether it is a scalping plant proposed to be somewhere between Highland Home and Sunset, or at the main sewage plant on the east end of town, a recycling plant will be established. When and if that occurs, Sun Lakes will be required to use recycled water. When Presley developed the property, they knew of this eventuality and ran piping to the east edge of our property to be tied into a future recycled water supply. However, the system installed will only service the Championship Golf Course. There was no provision made for common areas or hillsides. We are looking into the cost and feasibility of expanding the installed system to allow us to use recycled water in other areas. As you can see we take the issue of our future water supply very seriously, and are doing everything possible to reduce our consumption and prepare for the future. Bus Room MCH Multipurpose Rm.
