This 24 hour event will begin May 11 at 9 am and end May 12 at 9 am. It will be held at the Sports Park on Beaumont Ave and Brookside in Beaumont. At some time in everyone's life we will be touched by cancer of a loved one, friend or relative. Cancer is not fussy. The fear of hearing the diagnosis you or a loved one has cancer can turn your life upside down. Great advances are being made toward new treatments and eventually a cure. However, this research requires funding. This is where we can all help. We are asking you to participate in this event. We want to make Team Sun Lakes the best team at this event. Please help by spreading the word in your district, clubs, and among your friends. Donations are also welcome. In addition, we need you to be a walking participant. You can also volunteer to walk for one hour during the relay for those who cannot walk. If you are unable to walk and want to participate, you can rock for Team Sun Lakes. Our area will have a couple of rocking chairs to accommodate non-walkers. There will also be luminaries for sale to remember and celebrate those who have been touched by cancer. There is no charge for any survivor or caregiver to participate in the event. The first lap will be a survivor's lap to celebrate their courage and our love. This is the 10th year for Team Sun Lakes. We have raised over $380,000 in the past nine years and our goal this year is $50,000. If you are a cancer survivor, or know someone who is, PLEASE contact us to sign up to walk in the special Survivor's/ Caretaker's Opening Walk around the track. Together we can take the first step toward a better future for everyone. To sign up, please contact Bobbi Kremer, 845-6907, or Charlie or Russie Friese, 7690389. More info. can be found at the Main Clubhouse, through your district delegate, or by calling one of the contacts above. Thank you for your participation. EPAP DISASTER DRILL SET FOR JUNE 10, 2013 One of the most important, if not the most important annual event in Sun Lakes is the disaster drill, an injury and life saving exercise in emergency measures and procedures to be implemented not if, but when a disaster strikes. EPAP is an acronym for Sun Lakes own Emergency Preparedness Action Plan. Established in 1991, its mission then and now is to provide a professional system for Sun Lakes residents to prepare for, respond to, and survive a large scale area wide catastrophic event such as an earthquake, or the release of toxic material into the air due to a railroad or truck accident, with a minimum of fatalities , injuries, pain, uncertainty and discomfort. Following is this year's drill scenario: At 1:26 pm on Mon., June 10, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake has occurred on the San Andreas fault with the epicenter estimated at two miles Northeast of the intersection of Cherry Valley Blvd. and Beaumont Avenue. The temperature is 82 degrees with a 10 to 15 mph wind blowing from the Northeast to the Southwest. Schools were in session and the Second Street Marketplace retail stores in Beaumont were filled with shoppers as were the outlet stores in Cabazon Approximately two minutes after the earthquake occurred, the entire Pass Area lost electrical service. By 1:30 pm, the 911 operators were overwhelmed by the sheer number of calls requesting assistance for the many trapped and/or injured people. The operators have also been advised by local law enforcement agencies that all streets and freeways that provide access into the Pass area have been closed and will remain so until State inspectors can verify their structural integrity. The CHP has also reported a traffic accident involving a tractor/trailer in the Eastbound lanes of the 10 Freeway ½ mile East of Highland Springs Avenue. CDF Engine 20 has responded and reported that the tractor/trailer lost its load of chemical filled containers on the freeway and is on fire along with two passenger vehicles. Engine 20 is requesting two additional engine companies to assist in rescue operations and the hazardous materials company to identify and neutralize the spilled chemicals. Traffic is moderate to heavy on Highland Springs Avenue from Sun Lakes Blvd. to Ramsey St. and the traffic control lights remain inoperative. The land based telephone system has also become inoperative but calls from cell phones and reports from responding emergency service personnel are describing critical levels in the numbers and severity of injuries as well as infrastructure and building damage. The search for injured Sun Lakes residents is continuing amid reports of significant damage to many homes as well as common area, association buildings. However no ruptured fuel lines or downed high voltage wires have yet been reported. The scenario outlined above is realistic and can occur. Responding to and dealing promptly and efficiently with the drill premise is the objective of the drill, and the cooperation of every Sun Lakes resident is of vital importance. Your District Delegates or Zone Captains can provide you with further information. community news | sun lakes lifestyles | may 2013 | 7
