| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2020 | 17 Village Vets Since at this writing our Clubhouse is still closed, we will communicate with Village Vet members as soon as possible about our next available meeting date and speaker. As a retired military officer, I do get lots of articles of interest. I thought readers might be interested in an article about the newest, and 6th US military service, the United States Space Force. Similar to the Marines being part of the US Navy, the US Space Force comes under the Department of the Air Force. There will be Space Force Reserve Components as well as active service members. Initially there were 200 members of the US Space Force (USSF) on its first day of existence, Dec. 20, 2019. That number will grow to 15,000 members by 2024. "The mission of the USSF is a military service that organizes, trains and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force. USSF responsibilities include developing military space professionals, acquiring military space systems, maturing the military doctrine organizing space forces to present to our combat commands." On March 26 the US Space Force launched their first mission. It was a High Frequency Communications Satellite from Cape Canaveral. It all sounds like science fiction today, but in the future, time will tell where it will all go. While we do not know when we will again have Village Vets meetings and guest speakers, we intend on keeping you informed with our monthly Bugle publication both online and delivered to our current members.
