34 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2020 | As we continue to isolate physically, the International Dancers remain steadfast in providing support for each other, friends, and neighbors who might need help with grocery or prescription delivery. Their star of the month for this endeavor is Lakana Burkett, who has weekly offered her assistance to those who cannot get out. Thank you, Lakana! The IDS logo, designed by Donna Kissling, highlights Flamenco dance. Retaining elements of dances of India, where gypsies originated, flamenco has expanded over past centuries including Andalusian, Moorish, and Gypsy influence. It is an integral part of Andalusian culture today. The Jaleo, roughly meaning "hell raising," involves hand clapping, foot stomping and shouts of encouragement. A new generation of flamenco performers has expanded the dance to an international appeal. International Dancers Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time. Well, this is not the way we wanted to end our Country Western Dance Club season. Normally our season runs from August through the following May with a vacation in June and July. However, that nasty virus ended our season in early March. In a normal year we would have a free "Introductory" dance in August to let any resident interested in the club to come and learn what we do, how we do it and to also learn a few very easy line dances. We would then start in September with line dance instruction and our open Country Western ballroom dances. Will we be able to do that this year? All we can say at this time is to look for the Country Western Dance Club Lifestyles article in July and August and maybe by then we will know what will be allowed.
