| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2020 | 47 Genealogical Society By tracing the origin of your last name, you can learn more about your ancestors who first bore the surname and ultimately handed it down to you. Surname meanings can tell a story about your family that goes back hundreds of years. It can reflect where your ancestors lived, their professions, a physical description, or their own ancestry. The establishment of a family name may have started with wealthy landowners giving rural peasants, who were working for them, identifying names. The names would have been classified as occupational names such as Weaver, Farmer, Cook, Butcher or Plowman. Permanent surnames for a group of people could have happened anywhere from the second century to the 15th century or later. In Norway for example, permanent last names became the practice about 1850 and was widespread by 1900. But it did not actually become law to adopt a permanent last name there until 1923. If you have any interest in the above paragraphs, you will love genealogy! The Sun Lakes Genealogy Society meets the fourth Wednesday of the month in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room at 1 pm.
