54 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2020 | Sun Lakes blossomed gloriously in April. The fruit trees were a riot of color, the flowers sprang and the fragrances were intense. Unfortunately, for most of the month Sun Lakers were too confined at home to revel in the riot. But just as the greenery of April had emerged from the damp gray of March, so at last did pickleball spring forth before May Day. The Riverside County Health Officer decreed late last month that golf could resume. And with it, court sports! Sure we have to keep our distance. And, yes, those masks… But, hey! We're playing! And how great to be able to try out the new courts on the north side. Our club has embraced the new venue enthusiastically, if measured in our demeanor. The four courts have filled up fast! Speaking of masks, a shout-out to faithful pickleballer and ace seamstress Nancy Sheets. Nancy generously devoted much of her free time in recent weeks to making colorful and fun face wear. A number of her creations even feature pickleball balls and paddles in vivid hues. Because she is a thoughtful and caring person, Nancy made it her first priority to share her creations with the folks who have needed protection the most: our local health care providers. Thanks for sharing, Nancy! Columns written weeks before publication are at peril in these uncertain times. But there is no wrong in optimism. We continue to pray for better days for all who have suffered illness and lock-down. We look forward to June bringing even more outdoor freedom and actually seeing the smiles of our club members. Perhaps we should post photos on the courts so we remember the unmasked visages of our playing partners. Ah, the good ol' days. It is certainly a tribute to the fortitude and determination of Sun Lakes residents that we, as a community, have weathered the virus so far so well. Most of us will yearn for the day when no one remembers the phrases "social distancing," and "flattening the curve." But both have served us all well in these trying times. Here's to summer, patio parties and BBQs… and here's to Pickleball! See you on the courts! Pickleball Club Do you enjoy playing the billiard game of 8 Ball? If you do, come join us. All Sun Lakes residents are welcome to practice with us Mondays through Saturdays. We normally draw for partners at noon, then play to around 2 pm. There is no cost to join our group. However, if you elect to join a team, there is a $15 competition fee per three-month season. Eight teams compete every Thursday; four at 9 am and the other four at 1 pm in our Main Clubhouse Billiards Room. For a fun afternoon of friendly competition, come watch us play.
