| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2020 | 57 Lifting stay-at-home orders paved the way to get back on the tennis courts. However, some of us may be feeling rusty as we resume our schedule of tennis activities. Tennis training drills focus on each player's individual skills. Practicing can build the correct technique into your muscle memory while improving accuracy, pace, strength and endurance. Try these practice tips from Optimum Tennis to get your game back in the groove! Cross-court and down the line drills help a player get ready for cross-court rallies and can be accomplished with two, three, or four players. After an exchange of cross-court shots, the next player hits a down the line ball. Players can build endurance as each tries to return the down the line shot. Up and back overhead shot drills help every player develop skills and tactics on moving back to return overhead shots by their opponents. Player A stands at the center end of the service line, while Player B stands on the center baseline. Player A hits the ball toward Player B and Player B returns a lob shot. Player A decides between hitting an overhead or moving back to use a groundstroke. This drill helps players develop counterattack skills and playing against good net players. The volley to the corners drill improves a player's footwork and his basic net shots. Each player takes a turn at the net with the objective of hitting the return volley deep into the court in a corner. This drill is accomplished in such a way that the net player has to move a lot and be able to hit corners while playing net. The serving to cones drill can be done even without a partner. Place a cone at certain points and target each cone with your serve. Try to build your power and accuracy over time. This drill should be practiced alternately on the deuce and ad side of the court. These routines will help prepare you to participate in upcoming Tennis Club events with powerful, accurate serves, deep volleys, and the endurance to confidently rally cross-court, down the line, or put away an overhead! Our event schedule continues to shift in accordance with changing COVID-19 precautions.
