56 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2020 | King Kong "It was a cold holiday weekend in early 1990, when I decided to take the RV up to Big Bear for the kids to play in the snow. We were loaded for bear, my daughter and son really psyched to go on a wintry weekend trip. I was halfway up the mountainside, after a surprise overnight freeze, when I realized there was black ice on the road and even though I was only going 15 mph, it felt like tiptoeing on a perilous iced over riverbed. "All of a sudden, I could feel myself sliding as the whole vehicle swung to the left. I couldn't tell which part of the motorhome was heading into the hill. Out of control, the kids tensing in the back, we hit. Bam! We slid into the mountain and the only thing that stopped us was a shrub that caught on the back fender of the RV. For a moment, my heart stopped as I realized what just happened. I was able to ease out of the side and get back on the road, but that was the end of our little excursion," recounted this tennis pro. This Hispanic/American speaks fluent Spanish and has been playing tennis for 55 years, and Pop Tennis for five. That is quite evident on the Pop Tennis court. I like to call him King Kong. He has a reach that extends to the sides of the court and most of the time, he just needs to stand in the middle, raise one arm or the other and shoot the ball back! He has been to Japan and Hawaii and he often says his name out loud when he misses the ball. The one thing he wishes he could have done in life was to be financially successful enough to help others. He is in construction and can do everything from raising a house to fixing anything in it. He is still working and can help you with anything in your house. I am sure you know him… Pat Carter! So come join us for a King Kong experience! Demo paddles are available. Come out and see what it's all about, or call Pat or Michelle Carter at (909) 747-5851. Come out on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays (free for pop and pickleball), and Sundays from 8 am to 10 am to intermingle with some real characters!
