68 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2020 | Vernon R. Bowman passed away April 7, 2020 after a valiant struggle after brain surgery and COVID-19. He was born on September 16, 1927 in New Waverly, Indiana to Leroy and Juanita Bowman. After high school, Vern served in the Army Air Corps for two years and returned home to Long Beach, California where he graduated from Long Beach City College. He met and married Sally in 1955 and, sadly, lost her in 1963. Vern spent the next years raising their children, Salette Filadelfia, Ann Minshall, and Robert and Roger Bowman. He met Joyce at Parents Without Partners and they married in 1985, inheriting an extension of family, Steven and Robert Justice plus, together, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Vern and Joyce loved to travel and visited 27 states and 44 countries. One of Vern's proudest moments was to carry the American flag to lead the International Square Dance at The Hague in the Netherlands. He retired from L.A. Water & Power in 1994 as a pipe fitter foreman, and moved to Sun Lakes Country Club. Vern and Joyce enjoyed family gatherings and belonged to the following clubs: Ballroom, Friendship, Garden, International Culture, Paisano, and Square Dance. Vernon will be enshrined in the wall at the Riverside Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Stewart H. Carr passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2020. Mr. Carr was a resident of Sun Lakes for 25 years following his retirement from insurance and investment sales in 1995. Mr. Carr graduated from Marseilles (Ill.) High School in 1947 and joined the U.S Army Air Force (later the U.S Air Force) immediately after graduating. He served in Germany in support of the Berlin Air Lift. After separation from active duty in 1950 he attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa where he received a bachelors degree in business administration and a commission in the U.S Air Force Reserve, later retiring from the reserves with the rank of Captain. Mr. Carr was a Master Mason 32°, a member of the Scottish Right of Free Masonry, and The Shriners. He marched in The Shriners oriental band in many area parades supporting The Shriners Hospitals for Children and other Shriner activities and charities. The band marched until, as he put it, "We all got too old with knees and hips that couldn't keep up." Mr. Carr was born July 17, 1929 and was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Victor H. Carr Sr, his mother, Delia Edwina Hastings Carr, and his sister Catherine Carr. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Victor H. Carr Jr, his sister in-law, Yuriko Shimada Carr, his nephew, Victor H. Carr III, his great nephew, Bryce Katsu Carr, and his great niece, Sierra Shimada Carr all of Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Stewart will be greatly missed by his family and many friends in the southern California area. Juliana Cecilia Florence (Julie) McCarthy was born on the 4th of July, 1937. Julie was a firecracker baby, born in England to Archibald and Rose Schulz. Rose passed away before Julie was two years old. Julie was raised by her father, her grandmother and her sister, Josephine. When Julie started school, her father thought she was becoming a little rowdy and asked her grandmother to take her to the nuns to calm her down. The nuns noticed she was very bright and knew she needed more challenges and began to instruct her in sewing, knitting and crocheting, which served her well for the rest of her life. Julie's quilting skills were very impressive and her knitting stitches were exquisite. Julie gave many of her friends and family gifts of her handiwork. Julie also made and donated baby beanie caps for the premature babies in ICU. Julie married Gerald Marvin McCarthy in 1955 in St. Ethelbert Catholic Church, Ramsgate, Kent, England. During this time Gerry was a Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force. They welcomed their first child, Anita Marie, in 1957. After Gerry left the Air Force, they moved Friends we will miss
