FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2020 25 THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT! Every month I close my article with a request for app suggestions. I don't often get a response, but when I do, I try to feature them. So, this month I'd like to feature some apps suggested by two readers. In fact, I'm going to let them do most of the talking. Elizabeth Westbrook recommends the Discover Bank app. Keep in mind that she emailed me late last year so the percentage rates she cites may not be accurate in a specific manner, but her point is nevertheless relevant. Elizabeth points out "online banking is already a winner due to higher interest rates…. [W]e opened up two [Discover Bank] accounts, one CD (10 years) and locked in 2.3% - Bank of America had .75%. And the other one was Savings at 1.8%. B of A had .03%!... I would give the app an A." Elizabeth has another recommendation. She's a fan of the Metrolink app. "Being a senior citizen, the price of a round trip ticket to LA including free transfers to local busses and rails (a nice walk to Chinatown and across from Olvera Street, plus the all Line's access) is $10. Half priced! "We like it because it's paid for through our credit card and we jump on the train and when the conductor wants to scan our ticket, it's right off the phone! We can even go to Long Beach, Korea Town, or Universal City. If you park at the San Bernardino main depot, parking is free." Still another from Elizabeth is an app called GyPSy Guide. She likes "the features of being able to use it even it there's no [WiFi] signal and not use cellular data once downloaded. It even has the capability of using free GPS signals. Tours work off line; it's like having a tour guide in the car." Robin Low likes the Locast TV app. "Over-the-air Los Angeles TV stations via the Internet…not quite free. It has apps for phones and Roku and other streaming devices. It has nagging donation advertisements and not true free donation amount." According to the Four Seasons Computer Club, "Locast TV - $5 per month minimum: Over the air Los Angeles TV stations (55 stations) streamed over the Internet to your home. Currently, this service is facing lawsuits from the major networks to stop them from rebroadcasting the over the air signals through the Internet." Robin has another suggestion. It's not really an app — although if you explore its many benefits, there are apps to access some of its resources. He's referring to the Rancho Mirage library. "Membership is free for California residents. They now offer free online membership for two months, subject to in person verification after the lockdown. The library offers lots of online resources. The one I use most is Kanopy…eight free no ad movies per month and free access to many of the Great Courses. "The Library has a large auditorium and over the years has held many performances. Anyone can view the past shows online via the Library's YouTube channel." This is a fantastic resource whether you are at home or at this beautiful library. If you go to their website at www.ranchomiragelibrary. org, you'll be amazed at their resources including access to books, audiobooks, newspapers, and movies.
