While all of us struggle with the pandemic and social issues, the Rainbow Group is optimistic that we will soon be able to resume much of our lives as before. There are sure to be differences, but we will still support the Four Seasons LGBT community and our neighbors as best we can. We have been reminded that our friendships are vital to all of us. As of this writing, some Four Seasons activities are resuming, many with restrictions. We are hopeful that we will be able to again hold our monthly meeting. We will update the Rainbow Group Facebook page and email list with any late breaking developments. In the meantime, mark your calendars for Thursday, July 23 at 6 pm for our monthly meeting in The Lodge Game Room. Some of the group meet in the Bistro or on the patio for dinner prior to the meeting. Feel free to join us, even if we must break into smaller tables! We hope this finds our members, friends and families doing well and we look forward to seeing everyone again! If you have any questions, please contact Dale at (951) 797-0364. ~ Dale Beckes My Summer Vacation Most people think of Nebraska as a square, flat state with endless corn fields. I think of it as Back Home. I was born in Ainsworth, population 2000, but lived along the Niobrara river at Meadville, 1950 census - 29. The "town" was a single clapboard building that served as a grocery story, post office, and gas station. We moved to California when I was six, but I spent endless summer vacations on my grandparent's farm on the south side of the river. The old farmhouse, built around 1889, was once a stagecoach stop. My only sibling, my brother Joey, was my first and best friend. But God blessed me with 18 first cousins, with whom I played, ate, slept over, and occasionally got in big trouble. My cousins, Mickey and Cindy, lived on the other side of the river. Every morning they would cross the bridge to Grandma's house where we would sit on the cellar door deciding what to do. There was no TV to keep us inside, only board games for rainy days. Grandma let us roam the hills and valley all day. Once a day, she would open the screen door and yell, "Yoooohoooo." We heard the call up the hill and across the river valley. It was time for lunch. One day we found an old lean-to cabin. Thick brush and a steep hillside made it difficult to get to, which made it a great hideaway clubhouse. We cleaned for several days, finding old jars, cups, antique utensils and not a few spiders. We swept the dirt floor and did our best to hang the front door back on its hinges. Our excitement was short-lived when Grandma found out. Not only did she forbid us to go back (spiders, unstable structure, and a rattlesnake den were mentioned), she kept us around the house where she could 'keep an eye on us.' We were disappointed, but compliant. After all, back then, we obeyed our elders. However, Grandma soon got tired of having us underfoot, whining about being bored. Soon we were up the hill, cutting down small trees and constructing our new clubhouse. ~ Linda Rau The Writer's Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 1:30 to 3 pm in the RCN Conference Room.
