FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2020 7 Considered by many to be the current "grand dame" of the industry, Teri was the professional consultant for the Animal Planet Production, "Groomer Has It" and has participated in several other productions. Teri also recently received an industry award nomination for Best Video Blog for her weekly Wine-Down Monday where, she said, "California groomers can get a state legislative update, a mini seminar, and a wine review all in one!" While she has a history in dog shows and grooming competitions, what keeps her on the road today is the high demand for her work as a judge and educational speaker within the professional pet grooming industry. Teri reminds people, "Judging grooming competitions differs from dog shows. Dog shows judge the dog, their structure, and how the dog measures up to the breed standard. Grooming competitions are a test of the stylists' knowledge and skills." They are judged on the preparation of the dog — has it been washed and dried to perfection, have the pet's nails and ears been properly attended to? The judge scrutinizes the use of the groomers' tools, like clippers and scissors. Judges look to see if there are clipper marks on the coat, if the scissor work is smooth and even, and, on wire-coated breeds, if the stripping and plucking work is done correctly. Profiles are also very important. "We determine if the groomer has enhanced the qualities of that dog. Does the haircut "fit" that dog — is it symmetrical, balanced, eye appealing? Difficulty also comes into play. (Did the groomer start with a lot of hair, or not so much?) And, finally, the groomers' handling of the pet is always paramount. (Are they paying attention to the pet's comfort? Are they compassionate?) All these factors come into play when critiquing a contestant's work and making placements based on these factors." Although pet grooming is her forte, Teri enjoys specializing in the business aspect of the industry, helping groomers better understand the business side of grooming in her seminars. "It's a difficult job and groomers do it out of their love for the pets, but they also have to understand that they have to put food on their tables. Many groomers don't make the money they should and it's mainly due to poor business skills. They spend the bulk of their time tending to the pets, so they must learn to balance that with tending to business affairs as well," she remarked. Teri and Jeff have lived in Four Seasons since 2006, so they are two of the real pioneers of our community. They are founding members of the Taste d'Vine Wine Club of Four Seasons and enjoy spending time with their two cats, Twit & Skittle, and can be seen on the trails with their two Standard Poodles, Kona and Jagger. Teri enjoys a cocktail with her pups, Kona and Jagger.
