Steph Curry By Sharon Cates, Resident I'm writing this the first week of June and happy to see many of our local businesses are re-opening with minimum restrictions. Posted on doors and windows are occupancy limits and mask requirements. Some have lines of waiting customers. Regardless of how awful you think your appearance, put on a hat and cover your toes. We must wait our turn at our favorite salons, let's be patient. At the beginning of this pandemic, masks were hard to come by. Many home sewers got busy. Simple patterns and directions are still available on the Internet. There are several styles to choose from. Stitchers were thankful for their saved fabric remnants and produced a variety of masks seen everywhere. These masks give us fun and unique sightings. Disney characters, Hawaiian flowers, camouflage, and animals are some of the face coverings I've seen. Some match the wearer's clothing. Have masks become a fashion statement? We all hope they are not a long-time accessory. Kudos to the sewers who spent their time at home making masks for others when they were hard to find. Our industrious SDV sewers made over a thousand for local medical personnel. Masks are being sold in many of our local stores and on the Internet. The supply panic seems over. The CDC recommends washing our cotton masks in hot soapy water after returning from an outing. Is this overcompensating? I don't know, but I follow the medic's suggestions. My stepson is a nurse for an ambulance company in San Diego so we have a go-to professional for our questions. Several times, my hubby and I have left the island only to have to turn around for home to pick up our masks. Problem solved; we now keep extras in the car. Please stay safe.
