60 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2020 | Arthur (Art) Lewin passed away on May 26, 2020, just three weeks short of his 94th birthday. He was born in Minneapolis on June 17, 1926. Art joined the Navy at 18. After serving for three years, he attended USC where he played the clarinet in the marching band. He graduated in January of 1951 with a degree in Business Administration. Art met his wife, Debbie, at a dance in May of 1950 and they were married in April of 1951. Art worked most of his career as a Senior Commercial Lines Underwriter in Insurance. Art and Debbie moved to Sun Lakes in 1995 after living in Sherman Oaks for 30 years. He loved to jog and was often seen running or bicycling around Sun Lakes and the hills surrounding it followed by a workout at one of our gyms. Over the years Art participated in many clubs and groups including the Drama Club, Tennis Club, Dinner Dance Club, Duplicate Bridge Club, Friendship Club, Paisano Club, Ping Pong, Investment Club, Young at Heart etc. He and Debbie loved to travel and had visited all 50 states, Canada, most of Europe, parts of Asia, Russia, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Egypt and many more. Every year they took a theater trip to Utah for the Shakespeare and Neil Simon festivals in Cedar City and the shows at Tuacahn outside of St. George. They also enjoyed the shows at the Riverside Civic Light Opera and the Redlands Bowl. Art loved to dance especially to fast music. He never seemed to tire, so he got known as "the Energizer Bunny." On cruise ships Art was chosen as Mr. Princess more than once and people were always taking pictures of him dancing and would call him "the dancing man." Art loved working with children and had spent the past several years tutoring kids in Math and mentoring troubled kids at Sundance Elementary School five days a week. He had previously volunteered at Child Help and Habitat for Humanity. Art was preceded in death by his oldest son, Frank, and his brother, Harvey. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Debbie, son Gene, daughter Eve (Paul) Wagner, foster daughter Vicki, granddaughter Isabella, great-granddaughter Aurora, and sister Joanne. Elsie A. Wiersma passed away May 8, 2020, from natural causes. She was born September 9, 1937 in a suburb of Grand Rapids, Michigan to Florence and Julius Meester. Upon graduating high school Elsie attended Central Michigan University where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Education. Reminiscing she would tell you, "I graduated on a Friday, was married on Saturday, and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska on Sunday." Elsie married William (Bill) E. Wiersma, officer in the United States Air force June 11, 1960. Ultimately the couple ended up in Fairfield, California where their daughter Lynne was born in 1966. Elsie continued to pursue her passion for education achieving her Masters from Sacramento State College in 1971. When Bill retired as a Lt. Colonel from the United States Air Force, the family moved to Irvine, CA in 1976. After sharing 30 years of marriage, Bill unexpectedly passed away. Elsie's journey eventually brought her to Sun Lakes in 2003. Elsie was beautiful inside and out. She enjoyed interior decorating, was a wonderful homemaker, and loved all fashion: classic, traditional, sassy, sophisticated. With her warm and inviting nature she brought the gift of humor and hospitality everywhere she went. Elise will be remembered as a dedicated daughter, devoted wife, loving mother, and adoring grandmother (Gammy) to her grandson William… and most importantly, as a child of God. Friends we will miss
