Mars Landers. Some of the things he created may be on Mars now. Marty's management skills were honed when he was the Program Manager of a $100M Energy Project for TRW and the U. S. Department of Energy. His experience and knowledge from managing this project were brought to bear when he joined Carol's Kitchen in 2011, after moving to Four Seasons. Meeting Arlene and Jim Ragan, while on a cruise to Russia, and hearing how they came to memorialize their daughter by means of establishing food kitchens in the Pass area, gave Marty an opportunity to continue contributing to his world. During his first three years with Carol's Kitchen, Marty was a kitchen volunteer at Cabazon, the accountant/ bookkeeper for the Board of Directors and functioned as an internal auditor for the charitable nonprofit corporation. In addition, the founder asked Marty to prepare and publish an operations manual to be used by the Board and the Carol's Kitchen volunteers. By 2012, he was the primary driver in leading the recovery of Carol's Kitchen right after the five-year embezzlement of Carol's Kitchen funds was exposed and an investigation was initiated. Ultimately, a new Board of Directors, with support from Marty, made the decision to recover and restart Carol's Kitchen instead of disbanding the organization. Marty was President and CEO of Carol's Kitchen from 2014 to 2019. He recently retired from the Board of Directors, but is still involved as an Emeritus member and the kitchen manager at Cabazon on Thursdays. "I enjoy the wonderful people who volunteer at Carol's Kitchen. They give of themselves," he said. Before COVID-19, the Kitchen was serving 3,000 hot meals per month in six kitchens. The founder's deceased daughter, Carol Ragan, said, "Ask your heart what is right and follow it." It seems that in retirement Marty Bauer has found a way to do just that.
