| OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2020 | 23 Genealogy Interest Group The Genealogy Interest Group is a group of individuals who want to find out about their heritage, who your ancestors were, where they lived and what they did. The group provides tools to do your search and help in getting started or suggestions to the experienced to breakthrough a stumbling block to another generation. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month from 10 am to noon with a short presentation and a help session answering questions the attendees have. We offer a second two hour period of individual help each month, date and time to be announced on the TAG calendar. We offer the World Explorer version of Ancestry.com, a search engine for finding your ancestors free of charge in the computer lab. (Individual subscription about $100 a month.) We offer the Family Tree Maker program on several of the computers in the lab to catalog your family tree data and present your tree data. The coordinators are Dorothy Miller and Don Wirth. Help sessions will add Peggy Singh. Contact us at ohccgen@gmail.com. Confused By Zoom? It seems that we depend more and more on Zoom - for Club meetings, Village meetings, and family or friend get-togethers. Don't worry. These simple tips can help you get started: Joining A Meeting 1. Find out if your computer even has a camera and a microphone. If not, you can always call in on the phone and just listen. (Or buy a webcam - $40 to $160.) 2. When you are invited to a Zoom meeting, you can easily join by clicking a link in the invitation. You will have the option of downloading the Zoom app or using Zoom.us in your Internet browser, (having the app makes it easier to access settings). 3. When you join, Zoom will ask for permission to use your camera and microphone. You just say yes. During A Meeting 1. Mute/Show settings - hover your mouse and these should show up at the bottom. A. Once in the meeting, you may need to mute or unmute your audio. B. Show or hide your video. C. Open Chat window. Note: iPad or phone zoom controls may be hidden. Try tap the screen or tap three dots or this hamburger: 2. Gallery view vs Speaker view To see what other view is available, hover your mouse over the screen, upper right corner. (or tap on iPad) "Gallery view" = see everybody. Click to see this view. "Speaker view" = whoever speaks gets the large picture. Click to see speaker view. Troubleshooting 1. If your audio is garbled or too quiet to hear, consider buying an external USB mic. Plug it in and find the audio settings in Zoom to choose the new mic instead of your built-in mic. Mics start about $20 and up. 2. Face too dark? Be sure there isn't a bright window behind you. Rearrange your lamps. More light on the face, less on the room behind you. Most of all, don't panic. It's actually fun and a safe way to socialize again! ~ Joan Bivin Technical Advisory Group Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time.
