6 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | SEPTEMBER 2020 | Another month with the pandemic has passed us by. Our Sun Lakes staff has continued to be here for the members. This will be my first month of presenting my report in a different format. You will still be able to pull the GM report online. The month of July was very active. FOOD & BEVERAGE TEMPORARY CLOSURE The Board made a difficult decision to temporarily close the restaurant. This decision was based on: • Governor Newsom's ordered to close indoor dining, bars, large gatherings, and banquets. • The member usage of curbside service has remained low. • The amount of cash burn has increased, resulting in greater financial losses to the Association. This decision is not easy, but we need to do this for the long-term financial health of the Association. If the Department of Health closure orders are fully rescinded, we plan to reopen at the end of November. During this temporary closure, we continue the project to replace our outdated Point of Sale system. The new POS system integration will be critical when we reopen as it will allow for better controls for pours, providing better ticket and financial tracking. Additionally, it will allow us to use tablets to take orders and process payments tableside. Also, during this time, a committee was formed (Restaurant Task Force) consisting of two board members, one district delegate and committee chairpersons from Marketing, Recreation, Food & Beverage and Finance. Their task will be to develop a plan for the restaurant and lounge reopening. They will determine what types of food should be served, prices, hours, and more. FOOD TRUCKS With the closure of the restaurant, Elise Campbell (Recreation Director), looked for ways that bring new culinary delights to the residents. She has been able to secure three food truck vendors that will come to the Sun Lakes main club house parking lot. Details for which food truck, dates and times will be posted online and on Channel 97. Elise is still working to acquire more vendors, so stay tuned. 2021 BUDGET DEVELOPMENT Budget season is upon us. We will be holding budgetary workshops through August and September. These workshops will involve the Board, staff, and the Finance Advisory Committee. Some of the topics that the group will be reviewing include planned expenditures, assessment rate, golf rates and restaurant pricing. This is a great opportunity to see how the process works. The meetings will be held via Zoom. Members can log in to watch the meeting or dial in by phone. ZOOM MEETINGS With the stay-at-home order from the Governor, we have been limited to holding essential business meetings with a capacity level of 10 people. In July, we had our first Open Board meeting since February. This meeting was broadcast through Zoom. We expect that this will be the format for future meetings until there is a reduction in coronavirus cases, at which time the Governor may open the capacity level. We are working with the Communications Advisory Committee to present the meeting better through Zoom. One key area we are testing is a separate camera and microphones for Zoom. This will hopefully address the concerns about not hearing people talk. AUGUST ACTIVITY August looks to be just as busy. There will be updates on the 2021 budget, Restaurant Task Force, Spectrum negotiations to name a few. The Board and Staff 's goal will be to update the community at the Board and Delegate meetings, the website, Lifestyles magazine, social media, and Q & A with Good Day Sun Lakes. TAKEAWAY FOR THE MONTH As I have said before, 2020 is not the year we had planned. With this pandemic, social and economic changes are happening now. We are all frustrated with being quarantined at home. In some cases, we are unable to meet with friends, or hug our loved ones due to fear of infecting others that may be health compromised. We cannot let ourselves fall into a negative place. We need to look to positive things in our life. We need to remember the places we have visited, dream about new adventures, and look forward to a future when we can enjoy these things again. We need to be positive. Until next time, take care and stay safe. GM Report By Christopher Mitchell
