14 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | SEPTEMBER 2020 | We welcome Sarah Sweeney as our newest member of the Landscape Committee! After she retired from her profession, she trained to be a Master Gardener in WA. She has lived in our community for four years and looks forward to contributing her knowledge and expertise for our community. This month there has been an emphasis on "getting to the details" of the landscaping. We have worked with Artistic to address stressed grass, weeding, edging and trimming. Of course, the challenge at this time of year is the heat, and keeping the irrigation at the right balance of too much or not enough water for the variety of plants and trees throughout the common area. There continues to be a need to replace plants – those that are at the end of their life span, and those who just don't make it for a variety of reasons. Efforts continue to find the right plant(s), address soil and water issues, and ensuring that plants will be in harmony with one another. We have a number of hedges and bushes throughout the common area. You may recognize these two in your drive or walk of Four Season's Blvd. 1) "Rhaphiolepis indica, commonly known as India hawthorn, is a dense, broad-leaved evergreen shrub that typically grows to four to six feet tall and as wide. It is native to slopes, wooded areas along streams and roadsides in southern China. It features serrate, oblong-lanceolate leaves (to two to three inches long). New leaves emerge with bronze tints but mature to deep green. Fragrant, white to light pink flowers (half inch wide) bloom in spring in loose panicles to two to three inches tall. Flowers are followed by blue-black berries." htt ps://www.missour ib otanica lgarden. o r g / P l a n t F i n d e r / P l a n t F i n d e r D e t a i l s . aspx?taxonid=286552&isprofile=0& 2) "The Golden Euonymus shrub is a compact, evergreen shrub with green and gold variegated leaves. This compact little hedge serves as a great year-round shrub. Dark green foliage is prominent in the winter and spring, while summer and fall give way to yellow and green variegated foliage. The Golden Euonymus plant is a versatile bush that will adapt to any conditions! It can tolerate any amount of shade or sun, different soil types, as well as cold exposed locations." https://www.plantingtree.com/ products/golden-euonymus The Landscape Committee meets the first Wednesday of the month at 1 pm at the Lodge. Residents are welcome to attend. Please check with the desk, if you wish to attend the Landscape Committee meeting, and the current status of accessing the Lodge.
