| OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2020 | 29 There they are. The three men who keep the golf course in incredible, against all dirt odds, condition. We need to thank them for all their dedication and hard work. All three really like their jobs and so coming to work each day is more of a blessing than just going to work. Besides, where else is one to find better weather, to work in, than here in OHCC. Yes, Todd, Israel, and Justine are the O'Connell employees who take the utmost care of our golf course. They, for the most part, take turns doing all the work here. But Todd is our five-year lawn mower mechanic and spray machine operator. Check out those neat fairways. That is if your ball ever lands on one. And how about the sand bunkers? Justine makes certain that if you do land in one of our inconspicuous traps, that it is raked perfectly just for you. He is just sad that not enough of you land there to enjoy his dedicated work. And then there is the everyday interesting, if not diabolical, placement of the holes themselves. I know Israel does his utmost to put them in the easiest places to putt, but sometimes he has to put them in places where not even the pros should go. Finally, the greens. You must remember just a few years ago when all the sighting and lining up were for naught because the greens were so poorly tended. But now, it is just like Torrey or Augusta. Smooooth. All in all, when asked what they liked best about their jobs, the number one answer was the very nice people who play here. Surprised me too. Luckily the three get to work together, three native Californians who enjoy each other's company and love their jobs. Only one of the guys is married, but he has enough kids for all of them. Six. That's what I said… six. The others are single so you old widowed gal's ought to be on the lookout for one of these guys. These are good people who deserve your thanks, so whenever you are out there and come across them, give them a hearty "thanks guys". I spoke to several golfers coming off the links and asked them about the course… all were very positive and basically said… "it is August going on September in our San Diego desert and look at our beautiful green golf course." Nuff said. Many thanks Todd, Israel and Justine. Note: last month I gave Georgia a few more titles than she earned. She corrected me. Ok, fine! Golf Club Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time. Bocce Club Bocce play under the new rules seems to be working out. Of course, the social aspect is missing, but at least we get to play (and play safely). We owe our thanks to our Bocce President and Board members who made this possible. However, for this to continue, we must follow ALL the rules, or the courts will be shut down. The rules are made to keep us safe. So please wear masks and keep social distancing at all times while playing. Follow the registration and play time limit rules. And have fun! Thanks to John and Dea Abdelaziz for collecting the monthly bocce sheets and summarizing them. That is very helpful. To help them read your names on the bocce sheets, please print them legibly! July bocces: 30 Bocces: John Abdelaziz; 14 Bocces: Michael Simons; 9 Bocces: Carol St. James; 8 Bocces: Pat Stansell, Lee Cooper; 7 Bocces: Marge Dudkowski, Mike Stansell; 5 Bocces: Linda Cooper, Klaus Waiblinger, Tom Silva; 4 Bocces: Mike Caligiuri, Skip Dunham, Joe Dudkowski; 3Bocces: Dea Abdelaziz, Donna Lorek; 2 Bocces: Della Darr, Debbie Macri, Ingrid Nelson, Isaak A, Larry Bean, Joan Lohrey, Janice Walker, Joann Bush; 1 Bocce: Jean Meeks, Sherrie Scoby, Sandra Levin, Sandy Coleman, Mark Feinman, Jan Powloski, Marge Broderick, Vincent Costello, Rita Harper, Terry Amichi, Bill Baker, Joan Costello, Steve Norton, llen Friedman, Jackie Crosby, Colleen Moskal, Mary Yotter, Alica Oliger, Odette Engelberg, Fran Goldstein. A beautiful message from Anna Grinshpun: Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place. ~ Kurt Vonnegut
