18 | OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2020 | Genealogy Interest Group The Genealogy Interest Group is a group of individuals who want to find out about their heritage, who your ancestors were, where they lived and what they did. The group provides tools to do your search and help in getting started or suggestions to the experienced to breakthrough a stumbling block to another generation. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month from 10 am to noon with a short presentation and a help session answering questions the attendees have. We offer a second two hour period of individual help each month, date and time to be announced on the TAG calendar. We offer the World Explorer version of Ancestry. com, a search engine for finding your ancestors free of charge in the computer lab. (Individual subscription about $100 a month.) We offer the Family Tree Maker program on several of the computers in the lab to catalog your family tree data and present your tree data. The coordinators are Dorothy Miller and Don Wirth. Help sessions will add Peggy Singh. Contact us at ohccgen@gmail.com. Birdwatchers 2020 Bluebird Report The 2020 bluebird nesting season is over, with no new activity in any of the boxes. Box four and Box 14 fledged at the end of July, four fledglings each. We had second nesting's in only four of the 13 boxes this year, chiefly due to a very late start to the first nesting, the spring being wet and cold. Two boxes had no activity at all this year (although one had bees that set up residence!). We also had our share of tragedy: no hatchlings survived from the first nesting in Box four and only one of five survived from the first nesting in Box two. Our grand total for the year was 60 fledged: 22 on the front nine and 38 on the back nine. This is down considerably from 82 last year. It was a stressful year as we dealt with the pandemic. Monitoring was affected by the need for social distancing and by closure of the golf course for a period of time. This made it difficult to record accurate dates for nest building, egg laying, and hatching. I would like to say let's hope next year is easier, but even if the pandemic is over, we may be dealing with golf course renovation! I would like to thank the monitors – Anna Grinshpun, Sandy Harvey, Bill and Martha Saltzman, and Joyce Baker - who so faithfully carried out their duties and remained flexible and cheerful despite the challenges! Thanks to Bill for his extra efforts: picking up mealworms, escorting the beekeeper, etc. Thanks also to Carolyn Hollander for her guidance and support as I learned the ropes. I hope you will all look forward to next year with me. ~ Jane Shriver TAG members are here to offer computer, tablet and smart-phone assistance to all OHCC residents.
