Village Line Dancers Dynamic Duos get things done! Batman and Robin, Laverne and Shirley… Meet the team of Christine Alesiani and Betty Heyer (photo below). Christine is our amazing line dancing teacher. Betty was her mentor and is truly one of OHCC's finest! Besides being an active member of the Village Line Dancers club for 32 years, Betty also led its free weekly practice class for 25 years. She is real doer and a shining example of the benefits of staying active. She was a member of the Square Dance Club, the Ski Club, the Golf Club, and the Racquet Club. The Country Western Line Dance Club was founded in 1984 by Neil and Pat Mc Cullom. Betty joined the club in 1988 when it was all country music dance routines; they always wore country-western clothes while in class or at parties, including matching outfits for special events. Members were couples in addition to single men and women. They had a live band for their three or four dinner-dances a year. They traveled to Branson, Missouri where they danced at many of the country dance halls during their week-long stay. They also took a cruise to Mexico where there was line dancing on board. They were included in the dance show, which showcased all the dance clubs' activities. The Club was invited to other Club's parties to entertain or lead them in learning a line dance or two. In January of 2009 the club needed a new teacher, Christine Alesiani. Christine is originally from Texas but did not have a background in line dancing. Betty taught her! Yes, every weekend Christine would come to Betty's house for a lesson. Christine caught on quickly and has a real love for it. Betty was Christine's mentor and the dynamic duo was born. Over time, through Christine, the Club evolved to be called the "Village Line Dancers" because of a shared interested in more than country music. The dance routines incorporate steps that are common to many ballroom dances, but still in a line — guided with verbal prompts, and without dance partners. We thank Betty for her 32 years of commitment to our Club as Secretary, President, teacher, mentor, party committee member, and now historian. Christine is an excellent teacher, bringing enthusiasm and new dances to The Village Line Dancers with every class. Like us all, this dynamic duo hopes it is not too much longer before we are line dancing together again. | OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2020 | 15 Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time.
