Oktoberfest 2020 has been canceled in Munich, Germany due to the coronavirus, but you
can still head up to Big Bear for their Ockoberfestival. The Chamber of Commerce and the
website www.bigbearevents.com promises "a festival like no other" which might just mean at
no other time did you have to wear a mask and try to drink a beer at the same time. They
promise authentic German entertainment, Brats and Knockwurst, and Bavarian beer. My own
past experience with the Oktoberfest in Big Bear is a younger perhaps noisy crowd. It might not
be as desirable as celebrating closer to home.
Put the wine glasses away for this event. Oktoberfest is all about the beer. Becks is the
number one favorite beer served in Munich, but if you'd rather stay closer to home, as I suggest,
check out any of the micro-breweries in Menifee, Murrieta, or Temecula to find your favorite
local flavor and establishment. Most restaurants require reservations even for outdoor dining
so pick up the phone early as space is limited. When you are on the phone, be sure to ask about
the crowds they expect and if masks will be mandatory.
Safest isn't always the most fun, but you can amp up the fun of Oktoberfest 2020 at home
with your own small group of friends. Light up the barbecue, put on your Polka music and raise
your beer stein or "boiler maker," but not the wine. Before you bring your glass to your lips, it's
tradition to call out, "Zicke, zacke, zicke, zicke, hoi, hoi, hoi!" for good luck. Let the festival begin!
