November is the month in which we focus on being thankful. You can complain that you woke up with aches and pains and problems, or be grateful that you woke up at all. It's all about perspective and attitude. Don't you agree that feeling grateful is a choice in life you will never regret? From the air we breathe to the friendships we hold close, to the lovely flowers in our garden, there is always something to be grateful for. November is also election month. I'm quite certain you've noticed all the political signs during your daily travels around the village. They are everywhere! You can see them sprouting from the ground or swaying in the breeze. It's not that people are trying to influence voters, everyone knows the two candidates, but it's a way that people can interact with their community in this year of coronavirus, when we are limited as to how we can connect with each other. However, after all the election dust settles, let's remember the wise words of Thomas Jefferson: "I never considered a difference in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause from withdrawing from a friend." So don't you dare let any of this interfere with your love of gardening in the fall. This is the time to plant beds with cool-season flowers, such as pansies, calendula, candytuft, foxgloves, snapdragons, stock, sweet peas, and sweet alyssum. And for the vegetable garden, plant cool-season veggies, such as broccoli, carrots, cauliflowers, lettuce and greens, potatoes, radishes, and peas. November is the time for digging up sweet potatoes. November is sowing more carrots, making the first fire in the fireplace. November is planting garlic and rediscovering your socks and sweatshirts. November is oranges turning orange, sprinkling California poppy seeds as the first rains fall. November is cleaning rain gutters and screens. November is remembering how long shadows can get, grape leaves falling, and November is Thanksgiving… your Garden Club Board wishes you a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving. Until we meet again in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom, stay healthy, be safe, and happy gardening. For membership contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101. For fruit harvesting contact Judy Garth at (951) 797-3130. For general information contact President, Pam Mikkelsen at (951) 797-3080. Happy gardening. Garden Club 46 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | NOVEMBER 2020 | Paisano Club The Paisano Club won't be meeting again this year. The Club's Board of Directors will meet in November to assess the situation. All checks will be returned to members with a letter explaining further details, including what will be done with collected dues for 2020 and how the Club will handle the annual Board elections. If you have any questions, please call Jeri Wall at (909) 731-3311. Meanwhile, stay safe and healthy! Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time. "Gratitude doesn't change the scenery. It merely washes clean the glass you look through so you can see the colors." ~ Richelle E. Goodrich
