Founders Duplicate Bridge Friday Duplicate Bridge Another month has passed without face to face Bridge. Those of us who enjoy online games have various options to play our favorite game. The most popular platform is BBO (bridgebase.) Has anyone ever wondered how the scoring works? Many casual games and team match on BBO are scored in IMPs. Trying to google it will not help. According to the dictionary an imp is a small, mischievous devil or sprite. Merriam Webster defines it is a small demon; Wikipedia calls it a European mythological being like a fairy or demon. Bridge players however know that IMP stands for International Match Points. Wikipedia: "International Match Points within the card game of contract bridge is a measurement for conversion of the absolute contract bridge scores. The total point difference between two scores is compared to a scale ranging from 1 to 24." In a two-table team match only two scores are compared. However, in an IMP scored pairs game (casual games on BBO), your score is compared to the average score of a 32-table section of currently playing pairs, with the highest and lowest scores eliminated. More on IMP strategy next month. Please stay safe and healthy. We offer a Duplicate Bridge game that combines the superior scoring of Duplicate Bridge but also has the friendlier and non- aggressive attitude of home style Rubber Bridge. With Duplicate Bridge, your true opponents are the pairs that hold the same cards as you would rather than your opponents at the table. We are not an ACBL game and for that, we not only offer an extremely reasonable game price of just $2, but also give cash awards to the winners. If you are interested, please call John Gates at (760) 295-5885, the president of this bridge club, to see if this type of game might meet your expectations. We are relatively small and have anywhere from five to eight tables. The games are at 1 pm on the second, fourth, and fifth Fridays of the month in Mykonos. You do not have to join this club to play your first game, however if you decide to join, the annual dues are $6. 38 | OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2020 |
