From the Recreation Director By Elise Campbell On behalf of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Troop 233, we'd like to thank everyone who donated and sponsored this year's Sun Lakes sanctioned VFW fundraiser! With your generosity and support we were able to raise approximately $2,000! In a year full of difficulty and unforeseen obstacles to overcome, its great to know that Sun Lakes residents come together and support our veterans! Thank You 2020 Sponsors! Sun Lakes Bingo Carl & Shelly Braatz Sun Lakes Charitable Trust Friendship Club District 4 District 7 Charles & Russie Friese Patricia Elevi Image Up Advertising & Design The Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003. It has become a national organization with thousands of women making thousands of quilts every year. The total number of quilts to date as of Oct. 31 is 260,805. This year 18,320 were made. The quilts are made to the specifications of the Foundation. They are made for veterans and those touched by war to thank them for the sacrifices made to protect our nation, families, homes and freedoms. We recognize that war can change a person and their life forever. The quilt is a huge hug of gratitude, love, and comfort - a real and personal thing to hold and cherish. If you want to get a Quilt of Valor for someone, go to the website at qovf.org and request one or call Diane Nottingham at (909) 841-8948. She makes several a year to donate. This year's quilts go to Colonel Patrick Kalar, Marine Corps, 1965-1994. Colonel Kalar had three tours in Viet Nam. The second recipient is John Hawkes Traband, Marine Corps and Arm, 1947-1951. He had two tours in the Korean War. They are both Sun Lakers. The third recipient lives in Four Seasons and is Master Sergeant Harvey Donald Madderra, Marine Corps, 1958- 1967.
