44 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | DECEMBER 2020 | Yiddish Culture Club In approximately 31 days, we will have made it through 2020. Everyone is moving onward and looking forward to the holiday season, and a better 2021. Hanukkah starts the evening of December 10th with the lighting of the first of eight candles. The Yiddish Club's usual Menorah Lighting Ceremony and reception will not be held this year. However, there is a Menorah placed near the Main Clubhouse front lawn and one inside the Clubhouse Art Display case and these will be lit as usual. This is the 10th anniversary of the acquisition of our custom designed wrought iron Menorah that was purchased with generous contributions from YCC members. For a little holiday cheer, look for a special treat for members that will be delivered on Dec. 9. Hanukkah –This Hebrew name means Dedication. Hanukkah is an eight-day holiday that commemorates the historical event that took place in Jerusalem in the second century BCE, when the Greek Empire was the ruling power. Jewish practices were outlawed and the Jewish Temple was defiled. A small army of Jews rebelled, regained control over the Temple, and built a new altar. Hanukkah's true meaning is about Jewish survival. Hanukkah Holiday Foods: Fried foods, especially potato pancakes (latkes) and jelly doughnuts (sufganiyot), are traditional. We eat foods fried in oil to remind us of the small amount of oil (just enough for one day) that miraculously burned for eight days when the Jews rededicated the Temple. Join us for this next general membership Zoom meeting on Wed., Dec. 9 at 7 pm, when another wonderful video will be shown. Members will be sent an email with the link and if you need help or practice with Zoom, whether it's with a cellphone, computer or tablet, contact Diane Stone. Join us on Zoom to catch up with YCC members you may not have spoken to over the last few months. Also, get well wishes to those who are recuperating, and sadly, our condolences to members whose loved ones have passed away.
