My daughter's cat escaped when she was packing to leave to go up north to care for her sick grandmother. The cat escaped into the neighborhood and he did not return until three hours later. Your animal may not be a flight risk but you can take a few steps to make a smoother departure. Our pets are part of our families and they need to be treated like that. You must make a plan, build a go kit, and have a plan of where to go. Planning ahead may mean that you will have to make separate plans for you and your pets. Your pets may have to be boarded at a veterinarian's office, a pet care facility, or a local kennel. You may need all or some of your dog's documents: 1. Vaccination certificates and the most recent heart worm test results. 2. Information about any health concern, medications, or a behavior problems. 3. Contact information for your veterinarian. 4. Identification information including proof of ownership and a current photo with you and dog in case the dog gets lost. You will need other travel supplies for your pet. Keep a leash, a car travel harness, and a pet seat belt strap. You may also consider a pet carrier labeled with the dog's name and your contact information on it. Your pet's go kit should have anything that your pet would need in an emergency evacuation. The specific items should match your pet's needs, safety, and medical needs. These are a few things that should be included in a pet go-bag: 1. Bottled drinking water. 2. Enough food for two weeks in waterproof containers or cans. 3. Food and water bowls. 4. Prescriptions, medications, and other health supplies like heart worm medications. 5. First aid kit. 6. Poop bags and clean up supplies. 7. Familiar items like toys, dog beds, and blankets to content your pet. 8. Stress relieving items like an anxiety vest or calming spray. Do not assume that your pet can stay with you in a shelter. Find out what shelter will allow pets. Many shelters will only allow service animals. You need to research pet-friendly hotels, boarding kennels, and animal shelters for somewhere safe that will keep them until you can return home. Be sure to check with family and friends outside the evacuation area. They might be willing to keep your pets during an emergency. More information on pet evacuations may be found on the CAL Fire, CDC, and the American Kennel Cub websites. I used the AKC website for the bulk of this article. The next EPC meeting will be Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 10 am via Zoom. ~ Michael A. Mendoza EPC Chairman, srmendoza@verizon.net Emergency Preparedness Committee
