SGMH Long-Awaited Emergency Department & Intensive Care Unit Open
The San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital opened their new Emergency
Department and Intensive Care Unit building last month.
Having passed the necessary state surveys to open its doors,
SGMH's new ED/ICU began seeing patients at 6 am on Tuesday,
May 14. Patients who were in the old Emergency Department
were moved into the new building at that time, while Intensive
Care Unit patients were moved later in the morning.
"The staff 's hard work and dedication led to a successful
survey. They joined the many design professionals, contractors,
inspectors and ProWest, our excellent construction manager, in
delivering a beautiful, safe new building to the community," said
Kay Lang, Project Manager. "This is the culmination of all of that
hard work."
ED/ICU opening the Women's Center was the hospital's newest
patient care building. Completed in 2003, the Women's Center
features hotel-style private labor, delivery, and recovery rooms.
The next step in modernizing the hospital, originally built in 1951,
is to construct a 6-story, 120-private bed Patient Care Building,
which will house the new main lobby, imaging center, four-room
surgical operating suite, central sterile processing, pharmacy, gift
shop, and more. The Patient Care Building is scheduled to be
completed by 2017.
"We are all very excited to be treating patients in this new building,"
said Mark Turner, Chief Executive Officer. "This is definitely an
important date in the history of our community hospital."
The new ED/ICU more than doubles the hospital's former
capacity, and features large, modern, and private patient rooms
in approximately 39,500 square feet. The new state-of-the-art
facility incorporates the latest in healthcare technology along
with enhanced patient care features, like bedside charting. In
addition, the new building meets the growing population of the
San Gorgonio Pass region, healthcare technology trends, and the
State of California's strict seismic mandate.
The new facility is a major milestone in San Gorgonio Memorial
Hospital's patient care delivery. It was funded with a $108 million
general obligation bond, passed by voters in 2006. Prior to the
