These are the ingredients for the sport known as Pickleball. Two families with bored children devised this entertaining sport in 1965 and named it after their ball chasing dog, Pickles. The game caught on quickly because it could be played by all ages, required minimal equipment and costs and was easy to learn. Young children who had never played a racquet sport could enjoy pickleball. Seniors who had hung up their tennis or badminton racquets came out of retirement to play pickleball. Even though it has been slow to start in California, it has finally begun to take the state by storm. We certainly can attest to that here in the Four Seasons community. We are still growing and have recently passed the 50 member mark. An average day brings close to 20 players to the courts. Thanks to all for all your support. Our new club has made great strides in a short span of time. The restriping of the paddle tennis courts to now make them full-fledged Pickleball courts was a great achievement. We have extra benches for all of our players and will soon have the post extensions and brand new nets to complete the court transformation. Our thanks to Activities Director Cindy Graves and Facilities Coordinator Renee Watkins for all their help. We also have planned a day of Pickleball with the Sun Lakes club. We will have several hours of round robin play in the morning followed by a buffet lunch and drinks. It should be a lot of fun and a great way to meet new friends and learn new Pickleball skills. We are aiming for a Saturday in June and will let you all know ASAP. What a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in the game to see some great play. Come join us! As usual, we encourage all interested players to come on out and give the game a try. It is easy to learn, great exercise and so much fun. We have extra paddles and balls for the newcomers so come on out. What are you waiting for? Our open play days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 9 am. We have also added a Monday night play for the more advanced players at 6 pm. For more information, call Linda at (951) 797-3939 or e-mail to lbsnipes@ yahoo.com. See you on the courts. ~ Linda Snipes SPORTS & Outdoor ACTIVITIES | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2013 39
