Book Club Read any good books lately? Here's one! It's Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. Marion and Shiva are twin boys born at a mission hospital in Ethiopia. Until their birth, nobody even suspected their mother, an Indian nun and nurse at the mission, was pregnant. Devastated because he was unable to save her from complications of the delivery, the British surgeon who doesn't realize he is their father, deserts the mission and the boys, leaving them to be raised by a pair of Indian doctors. Hema and Ghosh are wonderful parents and the twins grow up surrounded by, and involved in, the hospital work. Though they soon manifest very different personalities and approaches to life, they share a love for medicine and become doctors too. Marion, our narrator, completes his training in the United States and there encounters his father for the first time. In spite of the initial melodramatic situation, Dr Verghese pens a well written story full of emotion and richly drawn characters. These are people you come to know and care about as you follow them through five decades of love, death, betrayal, war and the practice of medicine. Join us at 9:30 am on June 11, in the Conference Room at the Lodge as we chat about this engrossing novel. As always, our discussion will be very informal, so plan to attend if you like books, even if you haven't read this one. You are welcome to join in or just listen. On July 9, Jeannine Lutz will present I'd Know You Anywhere by Laura Lippman. My pestering is starting to work but not quite enough. Four Season's Toastmasters, the Wind Talkers, has added two new members in April. Nice, yes… but not yet great. Where are my fellow neighbors? I am positive that among the 1000s of Four Season's residents, there are many of you who would benefit greatly from becoming a Toastmasters member. The fact that you're retired now is not a good enough excuse. You still talk to people, right? Sometimes to someone in a crowd of people, correct? Are you always at ease talking, or do you sometimes become shy, withdrawn, or quiet, not wanting to give your opinion to a group of people. Are you the type who would rather listen than partake in the conversation? What about when you go to a doctor/ dentist/ any kind of therapist, etc., are you the type of person who just answers their questions, listens to what they have to say, and then leaves? Honestly, you are probably a doctor's dream patient, but you aren't taking the best care of yourself. In today's world, most of our healers are too busy with too many patients to take a special interest in you. It is up to you to be your own medical advocate. You need to be able to question your healer about your medical plan with them and definitely questing when they prescribe you medication. You need to learn to talk up for yourself, that is, if you're not already doing so… and Toastmasters is the organization to help you achieve that goal. When you attend a party, are you the social bug, moving from friend to friend and easily meeting new ones, or do you walk in, look for a seat (because if you stand by yourself, you don't know what to do with your hands) and wait for people to come to you? Our meetings are every Wednesday evening, 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Come to the Lodge, you'll find us in the Conference Room. Every meeting is open to guests. You can sit in on a meeting or two to see how we do the "magic" we do. Then, it's totally up to you to make a decision. I don't pressure anyone to join. I just want to pressure you into coming and checking out what we do. It is truly life transforming!
