22 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JANUARY 2021 | Art League Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time. Happy New Year to all from the Art League. As 2021 begins, the situation remains the same here at Sun Lakes with group gatherings. We all hope there will be improvement soon and we'll be able to have our classes and meetings again. So we will go forward with profiles of our members, and at least get to know each other better. This month we are meeting Ramon and Sharon Salcido, who have been Art League members since 2003, when they first moved here. They both have been very active in the group over the years, contributing both their time and their talents. Sharon has been Treasurer, and 2nd Vice President in charge of the annual art shows in the past and currently, and she also was responsible for organizing the display cases in the Main Clubhouse in past years. Ramon has held the position of 1st Vice President in charge of arranging for the art classes and for the demo artists at our monthly meetings. Art was always part of Ramon's interests and he was already painting prior to their move to Sun Lakes. He works in several media, including oil, pastel, acrylic, and drawing. In the past he has taken many of the classes, given through the Art League, to enhance his skills and also to support our local artists. Sharon was never involved in any artistic endeavors until she took a stained glass course offered by the Recreation Department. She fell in love with glass and hasn't stopped trying new techniques and developing her skills. She feels fortunate to have been able to display and sell her art work at the Banning Art Gallery and also the Desert Art Center in Palm Springs. Both she and Ramon have won many awards over the past years. They both are native Californians. Ramon was born in Santa Ana and Sharon in Los Angeles. They met while attending Cal State University in Long Beach, and after a short courtship were married. They have two sons, Rick who lives in Bourbonnais, Illinois and Phil who is in Aurora, Colorado. Ramon is a retired professor from USC School of Social Work, and Sharon had a career in accounting, as a Certified Public Accountant. She was retired when moving here in 2003, but Ramon continued working until 2012, taking the Metrolink from San Bernardino to LA. every day. Sharon said, "We feel very fortunate to be part of the Art League with all of the superb artists, and to be able to learn from each other." She's looking forward to putting on the next big Art Show (sometime in 2021) where the beautiful work of all our members will be on display. She and her committee did a wonderful job on the 2019 show, and we all look forward to the next one in 2021.
