We often think of roses as the flower of love, and that is
exactly what Paul Nichols gives the roses on golf course
property along Colony Drive.
"When the lockdown first happened," Paul said, "I was
looking for something to do, and at the time the roses were
looking a little sad. I've heard that if you trim the roses, they
will come back and keep blooming. So I approached the golf
course manager and he gave me permission to tend them."
He thus began spending a few hours a month on the roses
and enjoying the results.
When he is trimming the roses, sometimes walkers and
motorists will wave and give a thumbs up. "Folks are just nice
and appreciate the beauty of the roses. It makes folks happy,
so why not care for them? And I had the time and it also gives
me something to do."
Paul, a former golfer (with four holes in one to his credit)
and a retired computer programmer, and his wife Karen have
called The Colony home for five years.
And why does he continue with this lovely volunteering
effort? "Well, that is easy. It needs to be done."
