| THE COLONY NEWS | JANUARY 2021 | 11 COMMITTEE NEWS COMMUNICATIONS By Greg Hill I hope you have successfully navigated the truncated holiday season! Hopefully, next year we will have a reason to celebrate! This committee has been very busy during the shutdown with our Zoom meetings. We have been diligently working on ideas to better serve the Board of Directors and the community, and we will be submitting our budget proposal for the Board's review. We hope you are enjoying the History Project articles that have been published so far. If you have photos or would like to share a story from The Colony's early days, please let us know. We continue to actively seek new members to join our committee. If you are interested in joining, it should be an exciting experience. To acknowledge your interest, please contact me at greg@neotechstudios.com or give me a call. Our meeting times have been changing frequently, so check back to make sure when we're meeting. It looks now like we'll be meeting at 10 am on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month unless there are schedule conflicts. That's all for now. Let's hope that this will be a fabulous and much better New Year! WANTED The Communications Committee is looking for a volunteer webmaster or webmistress for a new, exciting Colony website. He or she will work with Kara Hardy, Activities Director, and our technical advisor Jake Henricksen to organize and create the material on the website. The position is similar to the editor role for the newsletter. If you are interested and for an application, please contact Greg Hill, Chair, at greg@neotechstudios.com or (951) 526-9896. By Jodi Harris, Diane Schultz & Gloria Brosky A very Happy New Year to everyone! May 2021 bring in a better year! It is hard to believe we have had articles in the newsletter for 21 months now. We gals on the committee enjoy our monthly get-togethers, in someone's backyard or dining outside for lunch, while we put our heads together to write the articles – COVID safe, of course! We feel privileged to help you navigate what needs to be done to your home. As a homeowner, receiving a violation or Home Inspection letter can be alarming, but the overall picture of maintenance is huge. Jodi just met new homeowners in The Colony who never lived in an association before. They shared that they realize how wonderful a community with an association is because the aesthetics in The Colony make it shine! The Costly Dangers of Deferred Maintenance Your home is an asset to you. Deferring routine maintenance can cause the following: • Health and safety risks (decks and walkways especially) • Shorter asset life cycles • Costly emergency repairs • A need for full replacement rather than preventative fixes Get Ready for Rainy Season As you take out and put away your holiday decorations, this is an opportune time to clean your rain gutters and check that they are securely anchored. Doing this maintenance yearly helps defer the cost of replacing a broken gutter or damage from a clogged drain. Rust on gutter nails, dirt and material from roof tiles can run down and stain your stucco wall below. These stains will need to be washed and possibly painted. This maintenance is another way to save yourself money in the long run. Check for Critters Do you notice brown blurry paw prints climbing up your stucco walls? Chances are you have rodents! We suggest you think about getting an exterminator to address the problem. None of us want rats, possums, raccoons or squirrels living in our attics or garages. It is better to take care of it now than have an expensive repair later from critter damage. Decorative Accessories Putting away your holiday decorations is a good time to get rid of items such as wreaths and other holiday décor that is worn out. Now that the weather has cooled and shade umbrellas are coming down, it is also a good time to inspect them for wear and tear. Should they be tossed? Tip for the Month An easy way to brighten your house is to clean your light fixtures or touch them up with a coat of paint. Cleaning the glass will help emit a brighter light. ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL
