Despite beginning with the shelter-in-place directives and two shutdowns, we were able to pivot thanks to our superb HOA management company staff, support of the Master Board, and the caring oversight of OCLM, our landscape management contractor for Master Common Areas and landscape amenities. The Landscape Committee wants to keep our community informed, particularly new homeowners as well as those who have enjoyed many years at OHCC. The OHCC Living is the magazine in which to find some updates on the work of the committee. Four articles were prepared in 2020 addressing a variety of landscape matters, i.e.: • The plantings of milkweed to increase propagation of Monarch butterflies • New electric equipment (battery-operated), in use by OCLM, like the Green Machine seated-lawn mower, to improve care of large grass areas and noise abatement • Investment of mulching to reduce weeds, retain moisture and enrich the topsoil; free from El Corazon • The current loss of aging trees and the danger of reducing OHCC's Tree canopy – a loss of nearly 50 percent of the original 4,000 trees planted nearly 35 years ago. The following will provide a little line of sight into the windows of work: Landscape Operations: The Committee lost a director in September and at the beginning of December welcomed Douglas Dye as our new Director of Landscape Operations. As one of the standing committees of the Master HOA Board, communication between the committee and the Landscape Operations Director, is also facilitated by a Liaison Master Board member, Angela Takemoto. Subcommittees at work in 2020: • Slope enhancements: of the exterior perimeter of Leisure Village began in early 2019 for 10 areas. The final slope area is now being cleared for three sections, noted as the Dassia Slope, more than four acres stretching from the back gate to Thebes. • IPM (Integrated Pest Management): This work began more intensely at OHCC in 2014-15 as more attention across the country was being given to management of environmental issues to achieve control of pests, specifically via a balance of four components, i.e., cultural, mechanical, biological and chemical controls. Example of cultural control: Weekly reports of material - biological / chemical - applications in Master and Village maintenance areas are posted at the clubhouse (with product names and precautions to be taken). • Walking Paths: A new undertaking as a result of COVID stay-at- home, which encouraged more residents to engage in walking to the extent that the Leisure Village Pedestrian path has become a traffic jam, making it difficult for social distancing as well. Several suggestions emerged from use of the golf course for more walkers or paths to identifying other external OHCC areas. Discussions from the Golf Course Committee and the Master Board resulted in seven to eight possible sites to be studied. To date, three are being explored further for 2021 priorities. • Entry Monument Enhancement: This area has been considered several times over the years for major investment. A less rigorous approach has been taken than in the past to enhance the visual appearance without major excavation, which is being reviewed for 2021 proposal in consideration of ROI. • The Plant List and OHCC Trees List: These are now considered high priorities. More to come in 2021. AV Committee Landscape Committee
