40 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2021 | Yiddish Culture Club Here we are, Valentine's Day, as usual, the 14th day of the month. In addition, Feb. 25 starts the celebration of the Jewish holiday known as Purim. It commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, an Achaemenid Persian Empire official who planned to kill all the Jews, as recounted by the Book of Esther. His plan was foiled by Mordecai and Esther, his cousin and adopted daughter, who had become Queen of Persia. The day of deliverance became a day of feasting and rejoicing. The YCC has a collection of DVDs for your enjoyment. The list is on the SLCC website under Groups/Clubs, Yiddish Culture Club. You will find DVDS that are educational, comedic, musical, and adventurous, along with documentaries. Perhaps you would also like to write a review for the Yiddish Club article. Contact Diane Stone to enjoy some of this great entertainment. YCC also obtains other videos that are used for entertainment at YCC meetings. The following movie reviews might not be your typical Valentine movies, but dating, love and marriage come in all different forms. Sandstorm: Set in a Bedouin village in southern Israel, this event is framed by two weddings, events that do not as much bookend this movie as seal it closed. That is because despite the raucous celebrations, the clapping and trilling cries, neither marriage is especially joyous, at least for the brides. Hester Street: A Russian Jew immigrates to the United States in 1896. He settles in Hester Street- the Lower East Side of New York City where many of his comrades have settled. Assimilating to American life, his new name is Jake, and he has shaved off his beard. He also has an American girlfriend, a job, and a wife and child he wants to bring to America. Aye Yai Yai! Can his marriage survive these changes? The Other Son: Two male babies, born at about the same time in an Israeli hospital. One is Israeli, the other Palestinian. The boys are evacuated during a missile attack, accidentally switched, and then raised by each other's families for the next 18 years. How do the families react when the mistake is discovered? What disturbs them more⦠that their sons were raised as an enemy or that their sons were raised in another religion? Next general membership Zoom meeting is Wed., Feb. 13 at 7 pm.
