56 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2021 Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time. I know that many of us love playing tennis. It's a great way to socialize and get our exercise at the same time. It's also an enjoyable and fun game, especially when the score is forty-love in our favor, right? Well, but have you ever wondered why the tennis scoring system is so weird? In basketball, for example, it's either one point, two points or three points for a basket. In soccer, it's one point for each goal, and for baseball, it's one point for a single run. But for tennis, it's love, 15, 30, 40, deuce, advantage-in, advantage-out, tiebreak, game, set, etc. What? Who dreamt up all that crazy stuff? One belief is that this scoring system originated from medieval French, circa the mid-1500's, but this origin remains obscure. Some believe that the clock faces were used to keep score, with the minute hand moved to indicate a score of 15, 30 or 45. The 45 was later changed to 40. When the minute hand reached 60, the game was over. In other words, one point equals 15, two points equal 30, three points equal 40. It just sounds so complicated and illogical. Doesn't it? For people who don't play tennis, it probably drives them nuts trying to understand this confusing scoring system. Fortunately, for those of us who play regularly, it becomes second nature to call out the scores right before serving without thinking much about it (although it's not unusual for some of us to forget what the score is. Ha Ha!). Heaven knows it's difficult enough to master the many different strokes and techniques in the game – forehand, backhand, top-spin, under-spin, approach shot, volley, half-volley, lob, drop shot, up the line, down the line, cross-court, ace, let, slice serve, top-spin serve, etc. You get my drift? Despite this crazy scoring system, the joy we get from playing the game, in my humble opinion, is all worth it. So, keep on practicing, tennis fans. Stay safe and see you all at The Courts!
