SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | FEBRUARY 2021 11 By Jo Ann Krebs, Resident On December 18, the SDV Quilting Club met on the back patio to hold their annual members meeting and election of officers for 2021. Congratulations to Suzanne Wade (President), Susan Lewen (Vice-President), Pam Kent (Secretary) and Vivian Bellini (Treasurer). To add a little fun, it was decided to also have a "Holiday Face Mask Contest," especially since we would already be wearing masks. The photos show the fun results, can you guess who is hiding behind these wonderful creations? Everyone in attendance voted for their favorite and the winner was Vivian Bellini! Quilting Club Holiday Face Mask Contest By Theresa Rossetti, Resident Are you obsessed with Antiques Roadshow? Do you ponder whether some things you have in your home or in storage are worth a good amount of money? Perhaps you're kicking yourself for throwing out something you now think is highly collectible. If you enjoyed the photos of the Christmas decorated homes on the SDV website, it was obvious that we have a number of people in our community who like to display items they have collected over the years. We were treated to photos of Christmas houses, Nativity sets, Santas, angels, snowmen and menorahs. It's hard to put a value on some of these things. Perhaps they are precious only to you, but according to an AARP article, there are a number of things we might want to think twice about if we are de-cluttering or down-sizing. In 2015 Ringo Starr sold his first copy of The White Album for $790,000. While yours might not be worth that much, one in excellent condition could go for about $70. Here are some things to think about while getting ready for that move or garage sale: Action figures, in the original boxes, have been known to sell for over $50. Barbie's popularity has ebbed and flowed, but some models are still worth big bucks. Baseball cards, in perfect condition of notable players, definitely garner serious cash. A 1952 Mickey Mantle card last sold for $2.8 million; a Shoeless Joe Jackson card found in an old lunchbox sold for $492,000 this past May. Coca Cola memorabilia, especially advertising pieces, are desirable to collectors. Comic books, even if not in perfect condition, can earn you some moola. Furniture, Danish and Scandinavian Modern items, are desirable. If you happened to catch the story about the Brady Bunch house being renovated to look like the original sets, people who sold their 60s orange, avocado green and harvest gold items to the producers were key in the redo. Pokémon cards - oh, boy, I threw a lot of them away when we cleaned out our attic! Sports memorabilia, anything Michael Jordan, signed footballs, autographed anything, can be worth money. Star Wars collectibles have maintained popularity for years. Tools may not fetch a lot and do you really need all those saws? Just about every type of collectible has an Internet group where you might get a sense of values. eBay is a resource, and if you think something is really valuable, auction sites such as Heritage Auctions and Sotheby's Auction House are your go-to. Our garage is currently the repository for a number of large storage boxes filled with 1980s toys, comic books and other ephemera that our younger son had no room for in his condo. He just bought a house. I'm thinking his mother might want to open some of the boxes to see what's in them before loading them into the car for delivery! Are You a Collector? Winner: Vivian Bellini Susan Lewen - Pam Kent Pam Yang - Kathy Bird Clare Mendez - Kathy Townley Marty Webb - Diana Carofano Barbara Mages
