The kiss of the sun for pardon, the song of the birds for mirth, one is nearer God's heart in a garden, than anywhere else on earth. March is the month when spring officially begins and Daylight Savings takes root. It can be a dramatic month with sometimes wild and shifting weather as Mother Nature tries to shed her winter coat. But as the seasons change from winter to spring, it's the perfect time to review the special days, holidays, awareness weeks, and observances for March. Did you know that March is one of the happiest months on the calendar? Flowers are budding, chocolate is on sale, and its major holiday is just one giant party (March 17- St Patrick's Day), with no gifts and minimal stress. But that's just the beginning of all the reasons to love March. It appears there are many dates in March worth mentioning. Such as: March 1, National Peanut Butter Day, 2-Dr. Seuss's Birthday & National Read Across America Day, 3- World Wildlife Day, 4-National Hug a G.I. Day & National Grammar Day, 5-World Book Day, 6- National Oreo Cookie Day, 7-National Cereal Day, 8-International Women's Day, 11-Johnny Appleseed Day, 12-Genealogy Day & Plant a Flower Day, 13-National K-9 Veterans Day, 14- Learn About Butterflies Day & National Potato Chip Day, 15-The Ides of March, 16- National Artichoke Day & National Panda Day, 17 -ST PATRICK'S DAY! March 18- Absolutely Incredible Kid Day, 19-National Poultry Day, 20-International Earth Day, (first day of Spring), 21-National Teenager Day & International Day of Forests, 22-World Water Day, 23-National Puppy Day, 24-National Cocktail Day, 25-Tolkien Reading Day & International Waffle Day. March 26-Make Up Your Own Holiday Day, 27-National Spinach Day, 28-Respect Your Cat Day, 30-I Am in Control Day & Take a Walk in the Park Day. And on the last day, March 31-it's World Backup Day! What is that, you ask? Well it's the eve before April Fool's Day when they ask all the home computers and businesses to take the pledge: "I solemnly swear to back up my important documents and precious memories on March 31!" Pinkie swear… check it out on worldbackupday.org. Now that I've provided you with all those fun dates I'm quite certain you can find something to celebrate! And for my fellow gardeners remember March is the time to remove all the weeds, practice slug and snail control, divide perennial flowers that bloom in autumn, and spray your fruit trees. Fertilize your trees and shrubs, especially camellias and other broadleaf evergreens, and fertilize your rose bushes, I like to include a handful of Epsom salts. Plant summer blooming bulbs, herbs, potatoes and leaf crops. Harden off seedlings (gradually introduce them to the outdoors) and set them outside, and remove older growth from bougainvillea vines. Until we meet again in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom, stay healthy, be safe, and Happy Gardening. For membership, contact Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Linda Powers at (951) 769-3101. For fruit harvesting, contact Judy Garthwaite at (951) 797-3130. For general information, contact President, Pam Mikkelsen at (951) 797-3080. Garden Club 38 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2021 | I try each month to find another way to say stay safe and be well. Even after things reopen which may very well still be months away, we will probably be one of the last clubs to reconvene. It's hard to believe it's been a year now. I do hope we can find a new normal that we can live with, but God only knows how long that will take. Our 80s Plus Club is for residents 80 years old or "better" as well as their spouses, whatever their ages. Our monthly gatherings are where we socialize with a special catered meal and first rate entertainment. Our gatherings will be on Sunday afternoons at 3 pm and we will advise the specific date prior to resuming our monthly events. I do hope you are all well and look forward to our world changing back… soon. For more information about our club, please feel free to contact either myself, Diane Aarhus, at (951) 797-3676 or Donna Harrington at (909) 561-5066. 80s Plus Club
