Art Lovers It's March and spring is just around the corner. Art Lovers Club members are eagerly awaiting the time when we can have a get-together. We haven't met for over a year. Fortunately, our Board members are planning a tentative car trip to the San Diego Botanic Garden (formerly Quail Gardens) for Wednesday, March 31 at 11:30 am. A sculpture show in conjunction with Oceanside Museum of Art is in the planning stages. The San Diego Botanic Garden is located at 300 Quail Gardens Drive in Encinitas. The mission of San Diego Botanic Garden is to inspire people of all ages to connect with plants and nature. The garden is a 37 acre urban oasis with four miles of trails winding through 29 uniquely-themed gardens. A shuttle service will be available for those who aren't able to walk hills or long distances. Emails will be sent to members regarding the details of this trip and how to purchase tickets online. We hope you can all join us. OHCC resident, Dr. Stan S. Katz is a man of many talents and interests. He is an author, historian, (especially of Japanese culture), sculptor, and dentist among many other talents. Dr. Katz believes that sculpture is a wonderful pastime at all levels of engagement. The sculptures above were created at the Lynn Forbes Sculpture Studio in downtown Carlsbad, where lessons are given and the various sculpting tools and other supplies are available. Some of Dr. Katz's sculptures were inspired by significant historical individuals he has written about in a historical novel, The Emperor and the Spy, and in an illustrated biography, The Art of Peace. These individuals strove to maintain goodwill between the U.S. and Japan. At left are busts of Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, and Japanese Prince Iyesato Tokugawa (aka Tokugawa Iesato) who was born during the American Civil War and would come to admire the values of Abraham Lincoln. During the early 1860s, Iyesato's adopted father, Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi, received a personal letter from President Abraham Lincoln encouraging a close friendship between the United States and Japan. For his third sculpture, Stan decided to take on a more fanciful and playful topic: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which is not fully completed (see below). This is one of the requirements for shop-use certification. The procedure is different this year. As the Woodchucks continue to obey the COVID-19 restrictions, we have turned to the electronic media experts of OHCC, our AV Committee. With the help of their skilled cameraman, Rob Schoonover, and our own Master- Toy-Builder-Turned-Narrator, "Murph" Haugen, we have created a virtual Orientation Tour of the Woodchuck Shop. That orientation and the viewing of our safety video are requirements for shop-use certification. Stand-by for information on accessing the film. OHCC is blessed to have many volunteers serving on clubs and committees, giving their all to our community. Spring is coming and as you consider opening your windows, don't forget the free security window rods provided by the Woodchucks. You can pick up a form at the HOA office. Come join us in the joy of creating a toy, building an heirloom, or completing your honey-do list. Just remember to clean up the sawdust! Sawdust? You mean man glitter!
