28 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2021 | We can't believe that it is March already! Since COVID-19 vaccination shots have been available around our county, our hope is that you have been able to receive yours. Our residents getting vaccinated also gives us hope that we may be able to start our monthly meetings and even conduct day trips, during the last half of this year. In past issues, we have shared videos that we think are inspiring and beautiful. For this issue, we want to take a "Trip Down Memory Lane" and highlight one of our most interesting Travel Club Day Trips – our 2017 trip to Rubel Castle (also known as Rubelia). What makes Rubel Castle so fascinating is that it is constructed partly out of concrete, but also out of scrap steel, rocks, aluminum, telephone poles, bedsprings, coat hangers, bottles, and other re-purposed materials. In 1959, when he was only 18, Michael Rubel bought a packing house on 1.7 acres of land in Glendora, California, on which to build his childhood dream of a real castle. Over the next 26 years, he orchestrated the work of thousands of friends and volunteers to build his dream compound which grew to be thousands of square feet with towers five stories high, all without architectural plans. Other features of the castle include a restored 1911 Seth Thomas clock, which rings every half hour and is encased in rocks in a 74-foot-high clock tower, a Santa Fe Railroad caboose, automobiles dating back to the 1920s, a blacksmith area, a printing press room, three underground "dungeons," and a drawbridge. As always, we will keep monitoring the latest on the pandemic and what is being allowed to ensure we all stay safe. And, we continue to look forward to being able to travel and check out all the incredible "sights and sites" around our wonderful southern California area. Until the next issue, please continue to stay safe. ~ Your Travel Club Board, Judy Harris, Donna Wessel-Graham, Lynn Opelka, Callie Dean, Judy Buoniconti.
