| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2021 | 33 Personally, I like to play games "by the rules." It's more fun to know what the boundaries are for everyone. Our first game lesson of the year is 8-Ball. Now, I can hear you saying, "I already know those rules." Really? Remember, we've been away from the game for (unbelievably!) a year now. Let's review some of the basic rules. OHCC Billiards Club 8-Ball Rules • Object of the game: sink all your balls (solids or stripes), then sink the 8. • The 8 is spotted directly behind the head ball. A stripe and a solid on the two lower corners of the triangle. The other balls are placed without purposeful pattern. • 8-Ball is a call shot game, except on the break. • The Break Shot. • If you sink a ball without fouling, keep shooting; the table remains open. • If no object ball is pocketed on the break, at least four object balls must be driven to the rail. If not, the opponent may • Accept the table in position, or • Re rack and break, or • Re rack and make the original shooter break again. • Pocketing the 8-ball on a legal break shot WINS THE GAME. • If the breaker fouls in any other way, the opponent may accept the balls in position or take the cue ball in hand behind the head string. • After the break, if the shooter legally pockets his called ball, the corresponding group (stripes or solids) becomes his. A legal shot requires that you always must hit your object ball first and then any ball must hit a rail. If the shooter fails to legally pocket his called ball, the table remains open and play passes to the next player. When the table is "open," any object ball except the eight ball may be struck first. • Safeties or No Calls are allowed, and you can try to snooker your opponent. • Balls are NEVER spotted. • The shooter loses if he drives the 8 off the table or if he sinks the 8 illegally (sinking the 8 in the wrong pocket, or sinking the 8 properly but scratching). If he scratches while missing his shot on the 8, he does not lose. • Standard Fouls. Scratch, wrong ball first (the first ball contacted by the cue ball on each shot must belong to the shooter's group), no rail after contact, no foot on floor, ball driven off the table. Penalty = ball in hand, anywhere on the table (except on break where the cue ball must be behind the head string). Billiards Written by Club Secretary Kathy Thornton Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!
