SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | MARCH 2021 11 Crafting increased during the pandemic. Take a look at some of the projects done by Harriet Brunner (pickles), Sandra Day (glass etching) and Mabel Durand and Joe Costello, wonders with wood. PANDEMIC PROJECTS By Clare Mendez, Resident I, for one, am looking forward to a time again when I can go get a massage when my muscles are aching or even a facial to relieve my tired skin. But, I've discovered some ways to "zen" up my life at home. When I first wake up, I take a few minutes to just lay there with my eyes closed, deep breathing and thinking about my day ahead. Nothing to do? Great. That gives me more time for long showers. I can massage creams onto my skin, maybe even give more attention to my oral hygiene, apply make-up… nah. Not today. Remember when brushing your hair for 100 strokes a day was recommended? Gone are the days of jumping out of bed. I will take time to inhale deeply and get my blood pumping with gentle stretches before changing into my clothes for the day. When I am ready for my coffee, I can take time to hold the cup in my hands and feel the warm mug and breathe in the aroma. "Take time to prepare a tasty and nutritious breakfast to give you some get up and go," my mind says to me. But, there are days that I just reach for toast with some home-made jelly… heck yea. "Head outdoors." Again my mind speaks to me. "Nature is grounding. There is science showing that in nature, our physiology changes – our blood pressure, pulse and perception of stress are diminished. It's a good time to reflect or perhaps listen to a favorite podcast. Music helps to make your body move and might inspire you to go the extra distance." Unfortunately, a messy house is not conducive for relaxation for most people so it is necessary to do some work around the house in the form of daily chores, with music of course. How about setting out some aromatherapy to sweeten up the smell? A diffuser, in your bathroom is subtle enough and if you feel the scent is too overwhelming, just close the door. Of course, how you spend your day depends on an agenda and what makes you happy. These are no times to just sit around the house doing nothing, watching television all day… although I am guilty of that from time to time. Another guilty pleasure I have is to sit and read. I have to remind myself to move, take more long walks, or do some stretches, or yoga, to earn a good night's sleep. If I don't tire myself out during the day, I just might find myself tossing and turning all night long and that is horrible. When the night time falls, and you feel you've earned your cup of tea or favorite "beverage," put your feet up, dim the lights, and say to yourself, "This was a good day." And, while you're at it, think of all you are grateful for. It's All About You and Me
