SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | APRIL 2021 7 By Theresa Berg, Resident Our Lifestyle Director, Melissa Valona, created a fun Valentine experience for us to enjoy in our homes. Inside the pretty bags, delivered to our homes by monitor Dale Breault, were several items: a maze puzzle, a word scramble with Valentine-themed words, a coupon book, numerous chocolate kisses, and the pièce de resistance The Chocolate Tasting Kit! There were six types of chocolate for us to taste and score: Lindt 90% Dark Chocolate, Ghirardelli 72% Dark Chocolate, Cotes'Or Belgian Dark Chocolate, Jelina Chocolatier Honey Nougat Milk Chocolate, Icelandic Milk Chocolate and Lily's White Chocolate. We laid out each of the chocolates in the squares on the tasting board. Then we started tasting beginning with the one with the highest percentage of Cacao. The percentage of Cacao refers to the total content of ingredients derived from the cocoa bean. After each taste, we rated the chocolate on the score card based on five variables: Look, Touch, Listen, Smell, Taste. We also gave each chocolate an overall rating. In between each taste test, we had a sip of room temperature water to cleanse the palate. Everyone has their own way of doing the taste test. My husband gave each chocolate a small nibble and then thoughtfully filled in his score card. I, on the other hand, gobbled down the entire sample of each chocolate before making my assessment. So, the next evening, my husband had the rest of his chocolate samples to enjoy while I looked on wistfully. In the end, my husband preferred the Lily's White Chocolate while my favorite was the Ghiradelli 72% Dark Chocolate. It was an enjoyable way to spend part of our Valentine's evening! celebrating celebrating APRIL APRIL!
