28 | THE COLONY NEWS | APRIL 2021 | Men's Golf By Sam Currie, 461-0801 I'm pleased to report that the Colony Men's Golf Club held it's first "away" tournament of 2021 at the Welk Resort golf course in Escondido at the end of February, our first of these tournaments in over a year! These scramble format tournaments are popular events and this one was no exception, with 24 players attending. The Welk course is shorter in length than our home course in The Colony, but the greens are faster and more contoured, definitely compensating for that shorter length. As it turned out, the majority of groups finished with very similar gross scores, with the exception of one group that raced away from the field with an excellent final tally of 54. I'm told the secret to their success was in holing some very long putts on those difficult greens! Congratulations to that winning group of Bruce Hartwig, Dave Bailey, Bob Proctor and Del Mitchum. Want to join in the fun? Why not join the Colony Men's Golf Club by calling John Hoetker at (951) 461-6758. CLUB NEWS By Kathy Lewis, 412-0006 Oh, no… you missed it! The first Colony pickleball tournament was held March 7. Twenty of your friends competed in one of three divisions: women's, men's or mixed doubles, and for three hours laughed and ran around like little kids on the pickleball courts. In the women's division, Terry Mata and CeCe Gordon won 2 out of 3 games against Denise Groll and Marcia Fulcher to take first place. Scott Ross and Chuck Gordon topped the men's division after defeating Stan Naylor and Dave Kallgren in round one, then taking on Dave Williams and Mark Tamayo in the final round for a 2 of 3 game win. Dave and Mark played 3 games in round 1 against Brent DeWitt and Roy San Miguel to advance to the final round. Cassie and Gregg Ross brought their best game to the court in round 1 against Jamie and Skip Calvert to advance to the final round. Kathy Lewis and Shawn Furrer teamed up to play Jeanne Bender and Herb Reynolds in round 1. Kathy and Shawn won the final round after playing against Cassie and Gregg. Everyone had a blast and we hope to see more of you on the pickleball courts! Please call me to schedule free beginner lessons right here at The Colony!
