The California Stay-at-Home Order is still in place until further notice by the State of California Governor and individuals age 65 and older, or with chronic medical conditions, are at increased risk of effects of the COVID-19 virus. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid the area if you are experiencing symptoms of illness including a fever of 100°F or above, sore throat, runny nose, chills, not feeling well, sneezing, coughing, abdominal pain, or diarrhea. Note #1: The Board has passed these temporary rules in order to allow residents to conditionally use a portion of the Association's amenities. With that stated, it is the Board's expectation that all residents will comply with these temporary rules. If any resident is found to be in non-compliance with any of these, or any other Association rules, the Board reserves the right to enforce said rules as it deems appropriate within its authority. COVID-19 REMINDER COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD By Kathleen Ricketts Sharon Boll, volunteer extraordinaire, has been serving The Colony for numerous years, sees no reason to stop now, and continues to look for new ways to give back. The retired schoolteacher and her husband, Dale, have called The Colony home since 1996. Her involvement includes The Sunshine Committee, where she works with other volunteers as Chair for memorial services for Colony residents who have passed. "Of course, because of the pandemic we haven't been able to honor those families, but that program just allows us to be there for the family to help remember their loved one and share some time with residents. It is probably one of my favorite activities that I take part in." Over the years she has taught line dancing, tennis and craft classes to her fellow Colony residents, but one project dear to her heart is the annual hosting of the Marines from Camp Pendleton for Thanksgiving dinner in the homes of some Colony residents. Much of her focus these last several months has been coordinating the food distribution program inside The Colony provided by the Riverside County Office of Aging. Each Tuesday she works with a handful of volunteers making sure local residents stay safe and healthy with proper nutrition by delivering free meals. Sharon also started the Meal Train project which provides meals to residents when they return home from a hospital stay. While her plate is full with volunteering duties, she is always quick to point out that she doesn't do all this by herself, saying, "It takes a team to make these projects work." Sharon is a true patriot and every year she is busy pulling together fellow residents to assemble flags for the annual Murrieta Field of Honor sponsored by the Murrieta Rotary. During the 2020 event she was named a Field of Honor Hero and was honored with a medal citing her as a "Volunteer Extraordinaire for Exemplifying Service Above Self." And Sharon's patriotism doesn't stop there; every Memorial Day, Veterans Day, July 4 and Thanksgiving she makes sure Old Glory is flying at every house on her cul-de-sac. "I think of my neighbors as part of my family," she said. "I feel most joy when I am giving back, and what I love about The Colony is the cohesiveness that we have here. People just want to help their neighbors. Don't sit at home – get out and give back and experience The Colony… we are so fortunate to call this place home." e Voice of a Volunteer 16 | THE COLONY NEWS | APRIL 2021 |
