COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD | THE COLONY NEWS | APRIL 2021 | 19 By Ann Carter, Colony Aerobics Instructor/Personal Trainer Water aerobics at The Colony is one of the best overall workouts I can recommend, especially for anyone who has problems with their knees, hips and foot joints. It's easy on the joints because it takes about 50 percent of your body weight off of you, while the water resistance is surprisingly effective for a workout. We work on balance as well as strength and cardio. It's also a lot of fun, with great music, and the people who are there are some of the nicest people I've ever met. Seriously! I always tell my "newbies" not to take it too seriously — it's MY job to make sure you get a good workout and each muscle group is exercised. I also include moves that improve balance, range of motion and your cardio. Your job is to have a good time! If you're not a good swimmer or not a swimmer at all, I do ask that you stay in the shallowest ends — and to PLEASE let me know that! As you know, The Colony pool has a three leaf clover shape, shallow on the three ends and deep (5 feet) in the middle of the clover. This allows the participants to be able to stand throughout most of the pool. I have found that the three sections seem to allow like-minded people to connect with each other. The far side — furthest away from me — are the "bad girls" (and they're very proud of this title - LOL!). The "bad girls" don't take it too seriously and sometimes chitchat a bit too much, but they have fun and still get exercise. Then there are "the singers" to my left, who like to sing along with the songs, and like the "bad girls," still get a great workout. To my right are the "good ones," who like to be called this and work out harder than I do! There are also my guys, who scatter throughout but usually end up closer to the center of the pool because of their height. By the end of the season and without realizing it, my participants become lean, mean, fighting machines! Teaching water aerobics at The Colony for the past 20 years has been a privilege as well as an educational experience for me. I had no grandchildren when I started and now I have seven! I try to learn from each class and to constantly improve upon it. Please come and try it out — you may get hooked, too! Classes will start on Friday, April 16, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm and the cost is $3 per class (cash, please). All you need is water weights, and I have some you may borrow until you pick up your own. On Fridays, we use noodles which you can pick up at Walmart, but I also have extra of those you may borrow. Because of the COVID restrictions, only 30 people are allowed in the pool at the same time, so come early and sign in. The daily sign-in sheet will be on the table closest to the hot tubs. Masks are still required until you get into the pool. I hope to see you April 16!
