26 | OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2021 | Art Lovers February brought us a most interesting Zoom session with award winning Carlsbad sculptor, Scott Bruckner, above left. He showed us many of his sculptures while telling us how he got involved in sculpting in 1995 working with found objects and cast-off construction materials. After he retired and moved to San Diego County he developed his style of working with standing pieces made of rare woods. His favorite wood to work with is avocado wood. One of his sculptures can be seen at San Diego Botanic Garden. Our own Ernie Pick was also honored by being chosen to exhibit his sculpture at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas. Of his sculpture, above right, "Nature's Spiral," Ernie says, "The essence of sculpture is for me the perception of space; the continuum of our existence. Movement of space is conceivable. Movement, light and time itself are qualities of space. I say it is the sculptor who orders and animates space that gives sculpture real meaning. This is the direction I try to find and direct in my work." Ernie Pick has had many of his art pieces shown locally, e.g., Oceanside Museum of Art, Oceanside's Brook's Theatre Gallery, Front Porch Gallery in Carlsbad, Tide Beach Park in Solana Beach (an outdoor installation), Herbert B. Turner Galleries in Del Mar, Poway Performing Arts Center, Art Prospect Gallery in La Jolla, and The University Club of San Diego. The next Art Lovers' adventure will be a visit to the Fallbrook Art Center, 103 South Main Ave. (760) 728-1414 to see the 12th Annual Signature American International Watermedia Exhibition on April 8. Featured are the works of artists from the United States, Malaysia, China, and Singapore. This is always an exceptionally beautiful show that we look forward to seeing. Details of the excursion will be sent to our members by email. Woodchucks Rest in peace, Mitch McCarroll. You have left a legacy of family and friendship and woodworking and toys. We will miss you, Master Toy Builder, and will think of you whenever we watch Notre Dame Football, listen to talk radio, work at your bench, or imagine the twinkling eyes of the Pendleton kids holding your toys. Now, go make some heavenly sawdust… Winning Carlsbad Sculptor, Scott Bruckner Nature's Spiral by Erine Pick
